The reports, as CPSC published them

Reports people made to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. CPSC publishes each one after sending it to the company named, and doesn’t guarantee they’re accurate. A report isn’t a recall.

Each report is the words of the person who made it, as CPSC published them. The company’s comments, where CPSC published any, are set apart as the company’s own.

  1. No one hurt

Made Jul 14, 2025, sent to the company Jul 17, 2025, published by CPSC Aug 7, 2025

The product, in the report: Two-cup measuring cup with a handle, made of clear, heat-resistant “glass”.

A battered Pyrex measuring cup that I’ve been using daily for years exploded and shattered today out of the blue. I’ve been using it in the microwave often with no issues, but I hadn’t heated the cup today. It was cool when it exploded. It was filled with a pancake batter of flour, egg, milk, salt, baking soda, and vinegar. I had just mixed the ingredients and turned away to get the frying pan ready, when the explosion occurred. The hot pan was several feet from the cup. The only thing I did differently from usual was putting the egg into the cup before the dry ingredients instead of first mixing all the dry ingredients.

The product, in the report: Pyrex 2 cup glass measuring cup

I purchased a new pyrex 2 cup glass measuring cup, and one of the handle sides, instead of being rounded, came to a sharp angle, with a tiny shard of glass sticking out toward the bottom (probably a manufacturing glitch). I didn’t notice it until I went to wash it for the first time and sliced my finger open when it ran against the shard of glass.

The product, in the report: pyrex glass measuring cup - size 4 cup

I was washing my pyrex measuring cup (size 4 cup) in warm water and it exploded in my hand - the largest intact piece was the handle. It had not previously been in either the microwave or the oven so this wasn’t an issue of thermal shock. I had several cuts on my hands, but am very lucky because it could have been significantly worse. The measuring cup was less than 6 months old and had been purchased new.

The product, in the report: Pyrex, 2 cup measuring cup with teal numbers/markings. Purchased at Target w/in the last year.

My Pyrex measuring cup EXPLODED!!! This is a bit ironic..I had actually heard about the rumored “exploding Pyrex” and being from near [REDACTED], I went on a hunt for authentic Pyrex, years ago. Fast forward... I was in the kitchen with my 11 month old son, who was unloading a bottom kitchen drawer, a favorite pastime. I glanced in the drawer and actually pulled out a chopper, even with the tight cover on it, I thought better safe than sorry. I realized I had left my phone, (and recipe) on the dining table so I turned to get it. Before I made it to my phone just a few feet away, I heard this LOUD pop/shattering and a “raining” of glass that seemed to last FOREVER! I got to my son as quickly as I could, He was so startled he had simply frozen (THANK GOD!) in the middle of the glass carnage. I cannot explain what happened. I don’t know if he had hit the measuring cup on the edge of the drawer front, or dropped it, but at 11 months, he arms are all of what 12” from the floor?! Regardless, I’m not angry that glass broke, it happens. 1. Pyrex is marketed as indestructible. It isn’t supposed to be like “other” glass. I’m still not angry. Why I am here, writing this- I have simply NEVER witnessed anything like the way THIS glass broke! It didn’t even shatter, I would describe it more as a “spontaneous combustion” there is simply NOTHING left of the measuring cup but two small, 1” pieces of the handle that are so internally fractured, they are WHITE! The Pyrex literally EXPLODED into a fine, glass DUST, that spread in every direction for at least 10 ft. After vacuuming for nearly an hour, and scraping the cracks of my wood floors, I began scouring the floor on my hands and knees. I looked up near my refrigerator, behind where my son had been standing, my stainless refrigerator, the bottom 2-3ft were COVERED, in sort of a static electricity blanket of glass! I have never seen such a thing in my life!! I wasn’t cooking with it- it shouldn’t have had any crazy temperature change?! Unless he had put his mouth on the dish? And then the floor?! I don’t know. What I do know is this NEW Pyrex, that I had given in and purchased just a few months ago, when I could no longer read the numbers on my old, original measuring cup, IS DANGEROUS!!!!!!!!!!!!! By the grace of God, my son seems to have escaped unscathed! My feet and hands, on the other hand, did not fare so well. PLEASE do something about this! Pyrex is no longer made of the same stuff that we grew up with- it is not well known. But even if you are aware, and take precautions against heat extremes- THIS could not have been predicted and simply should not happen!!! We are lucky! But I’m afraid it is only a matter of time before someone is SERIOUSLY injured by these kitchen BOMBS! (And if you have kitchen Bombs in your own home, get rid of them!)

The product, in the report: Pyrex 2-qt (8 cup) Prepware. Advertised as “Pyrex Prepware is pre-heated oven, microwave, fridge, freezer, and dishwasher safe.”

Pyrex 2 quart (8-cup) measuring cup exploded two hours after use (and wash). I posted a picture and a full detail of what happened on Amazon.com if anyone there wants to see a picture of what happened. That is when I saw several other posts (with pictures) showing several diffenet types of new Pyrex “measure/ mix/ cook/ store” glassware products have exploded on people. This is dangerous and it is a problem that seems to be widespread so I decided to make a complaint to the Consumer Products Safety Commission.

My daughter pulled a 2 cup pyrex measuring cup out of the cupboard and it exploded in her hand. Glass traveled over a 2 foot radius and bounced farther. A piece of glass hit her in the face but did not break the skin.

The measuring cup might have been pulled out of the dishwasher an hour or so prior to being placed in the cupboard, but I’m not sure. The measuring cup is used routinely --almost daily-- in the microwave and is often placed in the dishwasher. It was not chipped or damaged prior to exploding. I’ve owned the measuring cup a year or two.

The product, in the report: 2-cup pyrex measuring cup

I would like to report an incident with my pyrex glass 2-cup measuring cup that was sitting on the counter. The cup had been used to measure some dry ingredients, but had not been in contact with any liquids for at least the entire day, had not been exposed to any heat, and had not been bumped against any surface. All of a sudden it just exploded, leaving the base of the cup intact but with multiple hairline cracks and the rest in pieces and shards. Fortunately, I was far enough away and was not cut. I discovered on youtube a similar incident of a gentleman who had taken a similar pyrex measuring cup out of the cupboard (not bumping it) and it exploded in his hand covering his arm with shards.

The product, in the report: Pyrex 8-cup measuring cup

I am writing to report what I consider to be a serious safety issue with Pyrex glass. Last night, I had a Pyrex 8-cup measuring cup disintegrate into tiny shreds in the dishwasher. This cup had never been used in the oven or stove, it had only been used to measure or hand-mix at room temperature. It was last used on 8/18 to mix a pre-packaged salad kit. It was stored in the refrigerator with the leftovers. On 8/19 it was rinsed in room temperature water and placed in the top rack of the dishwasher, where it sat for the next 2 days along with other regular glass items, including fine glass wine glasses. On 8/21, the dishwasher was run in the normal wash cycle, with both “sani-heat” and “heated-dry” options turned off, therefore, the glass was not exposed to extreme heat or thermal shock. Later that night I opened the dishwasher, only to find hundreds of tiny pieces of glass scattered all over. The pump section of the dishwasher had to be taken apart to clean and remove the glass shreds. The drain pump impeller was found to be broken with a piece of glass jammed into it. Even after carefully cleaning everything with a vacuum cleaner, I’m still finding tiny shreds of glass all over the dishwasher. Frankly, I’m now afraid of using this machine to wash my dishes, knowing small pieces of glass, nearly pulverized, are likely to be circulating with the wash water. No matter what the manufacturer might say, this is not normal. I’m not a glass expert, but as a Mechanical Engineer I have studied materials and their behaviors. Over the years I’ve seen glass break under various circumstances, but never something like this. It is important to note that other fine glass items were sitting right next to this measuring cup and did not break or suffer any damage. Something is very wrong with this glass. I’ll be happy to send the broken glass for your review and analysis.

The product, in the report: Pyrex 8 cup measuring cup

I had an 8 cup Pyrex measuring cup explode in my dishwasher. I think my explosion experience is different from most of the others I have read. I had a 2 quart measuring cup explode in the dishwasher a few days ago. The cup had completely cooled, I was reaching to pull it out of the dishwasher and had just touched the side of it when it shattered into pieces sending shards all around the kitchen, fortunately I only suffered two minor cuts to my fingers, more fortunately I was the only one in my kitchen at the time. This pyrex was at room temperature when it exploded!

Unfortunately I did think to take pictures or save the glass. I can assure you it was Pyrex, I had used it to make pancake batter, there was no stovetop heat, used my normal dishwashing cycle, etc.

I have reported the incident to World Kitchen. I am not hopeful of a serious response from World Kitchen, most of the responses I have read blame the consumer, and use the “small percentage” of explosions as proof of the overall safety. I intend to ask them point blank, what level of consumer injury is considered too much?

The product, in the report: A clear glass 2-cup measuring cup for liquids. All product details here: http://www.shopworldkitchen.com/pyrex/measuring-cup-6001075 The manufacturer lists the UPC as 7116001078 and the SKU as 6001075.

I have owned a Pyrex 2-cup glass measuring cup (contemporary- uses modern logo) for more than three years. I use it to brew tea in place of a teapot. This morning I filled it with boiling water as usual to brew tea, poured out the tea three minutes later, and left it sitting on its usual place on the counter while I made breakfast. About an hour after preparing the tea, when the Pyrex was cooled to room temperature, I heard a sound like the crack an ice cube makes when it’s dropped in water, followed by the sound of shattering glass. I turned around to find the Pyrex cup had simply exploded. Three quarters of it was sitting on the counter, shot through with cracks, and the rest of it including the large solid glass handle were strewn around the kitchen. I was alone at the kitchen at the time and can confirm nobody bumped it and nothing fell into it. The remains of the Pyrex continued to crack into smaller and smaller pieces as I watched. I draped a plastic bag over it in case it exploded again and waited for several minutes before sweeping it up. It was not near a heat source and all the fragments were room temperature.

I have used Pyrex products for more than ten years to brew tea and have never had a spontaneous explosion like this. I feel very lucky I was not facing or using the Pyrex when this happened. I expect Pyrex products to be durable and not to explode for no apparent reason.

A 2 cup Pyrex measuring cup exploded in the cupboard all by itself. It wasn’t being used, it just shattered while sitting in the cupboard. This happened about a year ago and I had forgotten about it until I saw the article online about other people having this shattering problem with other Pyrex items. I didn’t say anything to Pyrex about it at the time but I want someone to know it’s not just happening to people who aren’t following directions for safe handling of Pyrex.

I don’t know what changed with the pyrex products but I will not purchase another one. I have two baking dishes and a 16 oz measuring cup since 1971and there is not so much as a chip in them.

The product, in the report: Pyrex Measuring Cup (8 cup size)

Recently I purchased a Pyrex 8 cup measuring cup for my soup business. I’ve used Pyrex products for years with no problems and always thought they were safe for use in the oven and for hot liquids. My understanding has been that Pyrex can withstand heat unless subjected to great changes in temperature (i.e. cold to hot or visa versa). Yesterday while ladling hot liquid (less than boiling) into the measuring cup for the fourth time, the measuring cup exploded and shattered glass all over me, another worker and about $500 in prepared food. Fortunately my hand only sustained minimal damage and no one else was hurt. I shudder to think how close the exploding glass was to our eyes. I had glass in my hair, but no lacerations. I am very unhappy about my loss of profits for this week and having to recreate 50 quarts (12.5 gallons) of soup from scratch. I looked on the pyrex website to see if I might have misjudged the heat resistance of the product, but have found nothing that specifically addresses this issue. I would like to feel comfortable using Pyrex products and recommending them to my friends and family, but quite honestly I am now fearful that they may not be as useful and safe as I once thought.

The product, in the report: Pyrex glass measuring cups - various sizes.

I read with interest the Consumer Reports article on exploding Pyrex. After decades of problem free Pyrex use, I had two incidents and my mother had one incident, for a total of three incidents within about two years. In each case, the Pyrex was knocked while inside of a cabinet and the pieces went everywhere. The good news is that no one was hurt because the explosions were contained by the cabinets. The bad news is that it’s still very dangerous because every food container in that cabinet had the potential to harbor a dangerous and invisible glass shard that could end up in a future meal. Still, I’d rather dig glass shards out of cabinets than dig them out of people.

Incidentally, I have a Pyrex measuring cup that has completely lost its measurement markers. They faded until they disappeared. That tells me that the formula has changed not only for the glass, but also for the paint (or glaze).

Had used a relatively new (1 or 2 years old) pyrex measuring cup to make cream cheese frosting. Bowl was clean, dry, stored in cabinet at time of use. Made frosting with room temp. ingredients, washed bowl with warm water, set out to dry on a counter top away from any heat source. Went to put away in cabinet an hour later and the whole bowl exploded in my face. Lacerations on my hands and arms, thank goodness nothing in my eyes. Thousands of sharp shards, slivers and chunks of glass everywhere. Very very frightening. I am throwing away the rest of my pyrex for fear this will happen to one of my children.

I bought a 1 quart Pyrex measuring cup from Bed, Bath and Beyond in July 2011. Yesterday I went to wash the measuring cup. It had been sitting at room temperature, approximately 65F and was submerged into 140F water. It exploded in my had - it was not bumped against the side of the sink or any other item. The explosion was enough to cause a small cut on my hand and send several sharp shards up to 3 feet away from where I was standing.

The product, in the report: glass measuring cup

Dear CPSC: On 10/5/11, I mixed a little cool milk and an egg in a room temperature, 2 cup, Pyrex measuring cup that I purchased about 2 years ago. After emptying the cup, I placed it upside-down in a cool, half-full dishwasher (which would not be run until it was full). Twenty minutes later, while checking the cornbread in the oven across the room I heard a violent explosion of glass behind me. I looked around, expecting to see the window there smashed, but all was in order. Upon opening the dishwasher I discovered every part of it was filled with countless, 1/2 inch fragments of glass. The only part of the measusring cup that was still recognizable was a small piece of the handle. Although I removed all the glass accessible, even vacuuming out every bit I couldn’t see or pick up by hand, some of the pieces of glass had been flung through the grid at the bottom of the dishwasher and damaged its mechanism (costing $280 in repairs). Considering that had this spontaneous explosion taken place 20 minutes earlier while I was using the cup, I was lucky - I might have been hit in the face by the full force of the explosion, and probably in the eyes. I took photos of the inside of the dishwasher, but did not keep the fragments, not wanting to have such sharp bits around. A few days later I reported the incident to the manufacturer, World Kitchen, on their email site. Enclosed find copies of their reply and my answers to their questions. Although I was disappointed that they were not interested in restoring my out-of-pocket loss, I am even more disturbed by the dismissive attitude they showed, considering the dangerous product they are responsible for. I send this report to your office so that if there are any other such incidents reported to you this company may be called to account for their callous indifference. I have been keeping house for 56 years, and using Pyrex products for longer than that; never have I even broken one of them; nor have I ever heard of one exploding from friend or accaquaintence. One must suspect a recent flaw in the modem manufacturing process of Pyrex brand kitchen ware. I hope they will soon be called to account. Enclosed find three photos of the inside of the dishwasher, taken minutes after the explosion. Thank you for your attention to this matter. Consumer Added: Apparently I was not clear about the explosion of my Pyrex measuring cup. The cup was merely resting in the cool dishwasher; I did not turn on the dishwasher between the time I placed the cup there and its exploding. It could easily have been sitting on the counter for the 20 minutes. The dishwasher had no effect on the cup, but was damaged by the explosion.

The product, in the report: Pyrex glass Prep Bowl and measuring cup 8 cup size , Red markings for measuring

August 18, 2011, I was finishing up cleaning after dinner and I put my “wash by hand” wooden handle knives into the large 8 cup Pyrex Measuring Cup which I regualarly use as a mixing bowl or prep bowl which I had used earlier in the day. I put the knives into the cup point down, put a little liquid detergent, and filled with warm tap water. Then as I turned my back I heard an awful explosion sound and was totally astounded to see the cup had shattered in the sink. Fortunately, most of the shards were in the granite sink. The noise brought my husband out from another room and the 2 of us cleaned up the hundreds of pieces of glass (of course, not thinking to take a photo or save some glass....why would we?

For days I muttered about not understanding how that could happen and bemoaning the fact that for the second time I had lost the same favorite kitchen item. This one had replaced one I had for years “exactly” like it but had dropped a few years ago and it broke on impact. I used that measuring bowl several times a week for pancake batter, mixing meatloaf, making jam, itc. I would replace it again if I could.

Then two weeks after the incident my husband handed me the Consumer Reports and said, “ Here, hon. You should read this.” It was the article in the Oct. 2011 Consumer Reports page 40 titled “Shattered Glass.” I was astounded that others had similar experiences! Then I got on the internet and did some more investigating. It seems the only way I can replace my favorite old measuring bowl made of borosilicate glass is to find one at a garage sale that is “pre” soda lime construction. My kitchen is full of Pyrex items, some 50 years old. I have never had any similar experience except for breakage upon impact. I was not injured but I feel this is a dangerous product and people using it are taking a risk.

The product, in the report: This is a 2-cup, glass measuring cup made by Pyrex.

On August 26, 2011, I used a 2-cup glass Pyrex measuring cup to melt butter in my micrwave. I put 1 stick of butter in the cup, covered it with a paper towel and set the timer for 20 seconds. Part way through the timed cycle, the glass shattered in the microwave.

The cup was used periodically over the previous days to heat water for tea. The cup was filled with 2 cups of water and heated for 3 minutes, then removed to the counter where tea bags were steeped to make the tea. No problems occurred with that use.

The cup was noted as microwave safe.

After reading the October issue of Consumer Reports, I realized I should report this incident.
