The product, in the report: Pampered chef ice cream dipper

Our pampered chef ice cream scoop was laying in the sink when I dumped a pot of almost boiling water ( from cooking perogies ) down the drain. I was unaware that the ice cream scoop was in the sink. Almost immediately the end of the scoop blew out with enough force to blow the 4 quart pot across the kitchen and soaking me with hot water. I was quick enough to turn and duck as not to get blasted in my face with the steaming hot water, and thereby avoided injury, The blast was equivalent of a high powered rifle and left my ears ringing for a minute. Fortunately no one else was in the kitchen when this occurred, although it scared everyone in the house. I was unaware of any recall on this scoop until this incident.

It is hard to see in the picture, but the metal blade of my my Pampered Chef spreader actually cut through the plastic and came back at my hand. I felt the plastic break and was able to move my hand fast enough that the metal blade did not cut me. I briefly looked at this site and could not find other complaints on this item, but I am worried that it could hurt others if this was to happen to them. Have there been other incidents with this product? Can I return this item?

My ceiling, my cabinets, (L shaped on that side of my kitchen) had soapy water on them. There were no injuries and after I let the water out I realized the ice cream scooper had exploded. The metal and plastic pieces from the bottom of the scooper had come off.

The product, in the report: Ice cream scoop, filled with non-toxic liquid for easier scooping of ice cream

I was sitting in my living room on the evening of 6/17/14 when I heard a very loud sound, sort of like a window shattering. Upon going into the kitchen to inspect for damage, I found a pool of liquid on the counter where my Pampered Chef Ice Cream Scoop had been sitting. The scoop itself was down in my sink, along with the little plastic end cap. There was liquid on the floor and sprayed across the wall opposite of the counter, about 6’ away from where the scoop had been. I noticed a quarter-sized metal disk laying on the floor up against baseboard. When I looked up the wall a little farther, I noticed that the wall had also been sprayed with the liquid from inside the scoop, and there was a chunk of wood missing from the oak trim around the door frame in that area, where the metal disk had made contact with the trim.

The product, in the report: Icecream Scoop

The caller reported that while the icecream scoop was lying in the sink with tap water poured on it, there was a loud explosion which caused her to lose hearing to her left ear immediately, she gained it back a few mins later. She experienced ringing in the ear for a few hours. She received examination by a medical professional. There was no injury sustained by the incident.

The scoop was used about an hour earlier. The metal and plastic cap erupted with a force that could have caused serious injury to someone. It sprayed liquid all over the room and on the cabinets. She feels that she experienced similar problems of Release #12-062. Hazard: When the liquid-filled ice cream scoop is exposed to warm water, the cap and seal at the end of the scoop handle can fly off with substantial force, posing an impact injury hazard to nearby consumers.

(9/16/13) The manufacturer was contacted and she was informed that she would be refunded and to return the item. Caller feels that this product should be recalled.

Note: Caller will add more information when report is received.

The product, in the report: Ice Cream Scoop

I was pouring out boiling water from some eggs I boiled this morning and there was an explosion in the sink and I felt burning on my chest and underarm. My husband came in when he heard my screams and he thought an egg had exploded, but we found the ice cream scoop in pieces in the sink. The handle had exploded. I have burns on my right breast and right underarm. It is painful. My fear is that if this isn’t publicized that this will damage others worse. I have now read that this product has been recalled, but I never knew it.

The product, in the report: The Pampered Chef Ice Cream Dipper looks to be aluminum and has a solution inside the handle that transfers the heat from your hand to the scoop, making scooping the ice cream easier.

I am refiling this report due to the fact that it mysteriously disappeared. It was originally filed on 12-13-11

These ice cream scoops “ALL” need to be recalled.

On Tues, December 13 at 11:25 a.m. my Pampered Chef ice scream scoop exploded in my hand. I had received a notice of recall and was told not to use this scoop because the end cap was coming loose and the liquid inside was leaking out. So, I placed it up on my kitchens plant window to wait for my replacement because, I didn’t want my daughter using it. Today while cleaning my kitchen, I saw it there, and I reached over to grab it to throw it away when it exploded in my hand. The force shot the scoop into my kitchen wall leaving a hole. It felt and sounded like a shot gun going off in my hand and my hand was the barrel of the shot gun. I honestly didn’t think my hand was still there, but it was.... I really just had a lot of extreme pain and stinging. It sounded like a bomb went off in my house. My ears were ringing for a good 2 hours after the Pampered Chef ice cream scoop exploded. I was lucky my hand and wall and ears took the most of the force of the explosion. I immediately put ice on my hand.

I contacted Pampered Chef immediately and advised them that this product should not even be on the market. The next person may not be as lucky. This could have killed me if it were pointed towards my head. This product will kill a small child, if all of them are not removed from the houses across America.. Please! Please! Please! Make sure these ice cream scoops are taken off the market.

Since this happened to me, I have done research and this has happened to numerous other consumers. This is not just an accident anymore, people need to be aware of how dangerous this product is before somebody dies. Pampered Chef told me that they were not responsible for any injuries because they just sold the product. They then referred me to the manufacturer Zeroll Co. I believe that Pampered Chef should be held liable for selling a product in which they knew was dangerous. These types of ice cream scoops have been exploding since 2002, this is the first report I could find. Pampered Chef in my opinion is liable for punitive damages to all that have suffered from their lack of regard to public safety. They knew exactly why they were recalling his product. It was not because the cap was leaking, it was because they were exploding!

Since my report was filed on 12-13-11 there have been at least 5 more people injured.

The product, in the report: Pampered Chef Ice Cream Scoop

My Pampered Chef ice cream scoop was sitting in my dish drainer after being hand washed two days previously and literally exploded. I was standing using the other side of my double sink when I heard an extremely loud noise and felt a very sharp pain in my left breast. I lost my hearing for a short period of time because of how loud it was and actually thought I had been shot through my kitchen window. I held my left breast because of the severe pain and kept looking for blood on my hand and sweater that I was wearing but never found any. After further investigation, my 6 year old grandson found a small metal disk on the floor around where I had been standing. This is when I discovered that the Pampered Chef ice cream scoop had exploded. It had not been in any water and nobody had been using it - I had used it 2 days prior to it exploding at my husband’s birthday party and it had been hand washed as the directions had clearing stated. I had not put it away in the drawer yet and it was just sitting in the dish drainer. Since then I have had to have a mammogram, two Dr.’s visits and possible ultrasound and more Dr.’s visits because of the damage it caused to my breast (it broke my skin and severe bruising and hematomas through my bra and the sweather I was wearing). When I contacted Pampered Chef they knew exactly when I had purchased the ice cream scoop (August 2010), who had held the party and who the consultant was and informed me that this is when defective scoops were sold. WOW! I couldn’t even remember exactly when I had purchased it! And they didn’t even send out notices to let people know this could happen! When my car has a recall they send out notices to get it fixed but they couldn’t send a letter to inform me of a possible explosion and bodily harm of this ice cream scoop! My Dr. told me if this would have hit my grandson in the face (he stands about the right height that it would have hit him in the face had he been standing at my kitchen sink) it very well could have killed him with the damage that it did to my breast. I had to wait 5 weeks to be able to get a mammogram because my breast was damaged so badly that I could not stand to have it done until then. I’m sure I will heal and be fine but this is ridiculous that they were so negligent in informing consumers of this hazardous product! Shame on you Pampered Chef! I hope nobody else gets injured from this defective product and that Pampered Chef stand up and sends out notices to those who bought this product in July, August, and September of 2010!!!!

I had a Pampered Check ice cream scoop that exploded on my wife. In reviewing the recall sheet, the information states the scoop was sold between July 2010 - September 2010. Our scoop is much older than 2010, but had the exact same issue with the end cap blowing off the scoop and striking my wife in the face. I have contact Pampered Chef who has requested the scoop. Before sending, I want to check with the CPSC as to whether your office would like the scoop, as opposed to the manufacturer/distributor.

The product, in the report: Pampered Chef ice cream scoop that has some type liquid in the handle. Supposedly the liquid in the handle is similar to antifreeze and the warmth from your hand warms the liquid and this makes the scoop “glide” through the ice cream.

I was washing the Pampered Chef ice cream scoop when it exploded in the kitchen sink. The noise was deafening. The plastic cap as well as the metal cap that was under the plastic cap at the end of the handle flew off with tremendous force. The caps hit the inside front wall of the kitchen sink and then flew back toward the kitchen window. They hit the windowsill and dented the wooden sill. The caps then flew forward again and knocked over a large styrofoam cup filled with ice and coke. They knocked over the cup and then landed on the kitchen counter. My ears rang for several hours after the incident because the explosion was so loud. If I had been holding the scoop when it exploded, I could have been seriously injured. If the caps had flown toward me or someone else, they could have caused great injury. I am amazed that an innocent looking ice cream scoop could cause such an explosion -- the noise was much louder than a gun being fired. I have found out that the scoops were recalled in December 2011; however, I never heard anything about the recall. I firmly believe that there should be a mass effort by the media to inform the public of this problem. The Pampered Chef website has some information about the recall and they state that the plastic cap can pop off. That is such a gross understatement. The ice cream scoop is a potential lethal weapon and anyone who has one should be notified immediately.

A Pampered chef ice cream scoop exploded in my hand while washing it in warm water. The explosion was so loud that my ears were ringing. It was very forceful breaking a veins in my three middle fingers. They are so swollen I cannot bend them. The plastic piece plugging in the liquid center of the handle flew across the room breaking and knocking a potted plant off the countertop.

The product, in the report: Silver Ice Cream Scooper. Made to easily slide through ice cream. Made by Pampered Chef.

I have Pampered Chef Ice Cream Scoop. It was in the kitchen sink. I made some pasta and was pouring the hot water into the sink. The hot water went over the ice cream scoop. The ice cream scoop exploded. It sounded like a gun shot. The plastic end piece shot across the room. The metal end piece shot up and hit my arm cutting and bruising it. Thankfully no one was injured worse than I was. This could have been much worse.

The product, in the report: Ice Cream Dipper

I place the dipper into my sink, which was dry, I turned on the warm water to wash another spoon....the dipper blew up. The noise was defying and the smetal seal shot up and is sticking in the ceiling and the end cap I found in my living room. At no time did I touch the dipper while I was washin the other item. If I was holding the dipper to wash and it blew up at that time it would have hit me in the face or eyes. I called the recall folks and they informed mr that someone will call me and that I didn’t have to notify you folks. But something tells me this was the rigth thing to do. My hearing is still painful and both ears have a popping sound. I told them if my hearing doesn’t improve that I may have other avenues to resolve this. This item is very dangerous and I was lucky that I wasn’t holding it.

The product, in the report: Pampered chef ice cream scooper.

On Tuesday July 19th I was cooking pasta. I went to drain the hot water from the pot in the sink. The only things in the sink were 3 bowls, the strainer and the Pampered Chef Dipper ice cream scooper. While pouring the water into the strainer the dipper EXPLODED. Force enough to shatter the bowls, cut my hand, throw the pot from my hand about 10 feet away, blow curtains off window. Whatever was inside the handle got all over my kitchen. Including getting into my eyes and mouth. I promptly contacted Pampered Chef via email and phone to get a description of what product was inside the handle. [REDACTED] (I think that was his name)the rep I spoke with told me it was a nontoxic gel. I asked for proof of what it was since it went into my mouth and eyes. I asked for the MSDS for the product be sent to me. [REDACTED] told me he would get back to me on Wednesday the 20th. Never got a call back. On July 25th after I contacted the better business  I got a call back saying they got the MSDS and wanted my email address to send it to me. I gave them the address and received the MSDS. While looking over the MSDS I noticed that I should have washed my eyes for 15 minutes and drank milk. I was never told this. I was told it was a safe nontoxic gel. While the only injury I suffered was a cut hand and my kids being upset I still feel this could have really caused damage! I also am shocked at the lack of communication from the company. Only after I contacted the BBB did I get a reply. The gel was made of soluble oil B from Chevron company. I could send you the MSDS copy.  Thanks for your time
