The product, in the report: Nesco Garden Master dehydrator, model FD-1010. It is white in color, round, 16 inches diameter, 14 inches tall. The base is metal and the trays are plaster. It came with 8 trays.
Our Nesco model FD-1010 Garden Master dehydrator was set to 95 deg (the lowest) to dehydrate some herbs. After several hours we noticed that the trays were not nested correctly and the unit was very hot. We shut it off, after further inspection we found the trays were starting to melt. In our opinion it is no longer safe to use, it will probably start a fire. We contacted Nesco, we were told it is no longer under warranty and we could purchase a new base unit. That would not work, being the trays are all warped. No one was injured, however this is unacceptable.

The product, in the report: Nesco American Harvest Dehydrator & Jerky Maker Model FD-1010, Volts: 120, 60 HZ, WATTS: 1000, white, circular model with blower and heater on the base, from The Metal Ware Corp., Two Rivers, WI 54241, CUL US Listed 860G
I am looking at an August 20, 1995 article in [REDACTED] stating that American Harvest was repairing dehydrators because the heating element could overheat and cause a fire. I’d like to report that our Nesco Gardenmaster Food Dehydrator and Jerky Maker Model FD-1010, purchased March 2012, overheated October 9th, 2022, burning the grapes we were drying into black balls, and overheating the plastic trays enough that they deformed. I’d called the company about a week before, asking how to check the temperature as it seemed to be running hotter than I remembered. I was assured there was a thermal cut off that would not allow it to overheat. I believed the spokesperson, but clearly shouldn’t have, and loaded the dryer with 8 more trays of grapes. It takes a good while to make raisins. The manual says 10-36 hours at 130-140 degrees. I set it at 130 degrees even though I usually set fruit at 135 degrees because I was a little concerned. I got it all loaded about 4 p.m. and turned it off the next morning at 5 a.m. I contacted the company again after discovering the damage, and was advised that they no longer repair dehydrators and I should just buy a new one. I think this dehydrator could have caused a fire if I’d not checked it in time to stop the damage.

The product, in the report: Nesco Professional Food & Jerky Dehydrator, manufactured my the Metal Ware Corporation of Two Rivers, WI
Last week, my food dehydrator overheated during use to the point where the plastic trays containing the food began to melt. The product being used was a round, electric powered food dehydrator, brand name Nesco. I was using the product (as a homeowner, not in a professional or commercial setting). The product was being used to dehydrate banana chips. There were no injuries that occurred during this incident, but I am concerned about the risk of fire had this situation run further out of control.

No one hurt Made Feb 22, 2012, sent to the company Feb 29, 2012, published by CPSC Mar 14, 2012
The product, in the report: Nesco FD75PR Food Dehydrator
I purchased a food dehydrator for my father for Christmas. He has been using it regularly since then with no problem. Yesterday, he turned it on as usual and after an hour he began smelling a burning smell. When he went to the kitchen, the entire bottom of the dehydrator has melted through and was burning. It is very scary to think of what could have happened had he not found it when he did. It could have caused a major fire. I reported it yesterday to Nesco and sent photos. Upon reporting I felt that I was being questioned as if we had done something wrong. We operated the machine just as stated in the manual and this happened. I assumed that with something of this magnitude, I would have received a call back the same day. I did not. I called today and was told that the manager was reviewing the photos to see if it was covered under warranty. Of course it has to be covered under warranty - the machine melted during regular use! Aside from getting a refund, I am also concerned with the safety of this product and what could have happened if the burning had not been caught when it was. I would like this issue addressed as well as have the CPSC look at this unsafe product. Nesco would be looking at a very big problem had our building burned down.
