The product, in the report: Carbonator Cap for at home carbonation.
On May 28th 2026, I used one of these plastic carbonation bottle cap fittings for the first time. I had purchased them from Amazon ASIN B0DGT98J66 but had previously set them aside because the build quality appeared poor, instead using three all-metal fittings I own. On this day all of my metal fittings were in use, so I used one of these plastic units. I attached the fitting to a bottle and pressurized it to 30 PSI, then placed it in the freezer to chill, a routine I have performed hundreds of times without incident using my metal fittings. Approximately one hour later, I removed the bottle and began to unscrew the fitting. On the first quarter-turn, the fitting blew off under pressure with enough force to escape my full grip, striking me in the forehead above the left eyebrow and splitting the skin open. The wound bled and has since become bruised and swollen. I have photographed the injury. After the injury, I tested the two remaining plastic fittings from the same package under controlled conditions. Both failed catastrophically at 60 PSI, splitting and spreading apart at the first point of thread engagement. For comparison, I then tested my metal fittings on the same type of bottle. In that case the plastic bottle itself failed first at nearly 160 PSI, with the metal fitting remaining intact. This indicates the plastic fittings fail well below the pressure that the bottle and a properly built fitting can withstand, and far below a safe margin for the 30 PSI carbonation pressures these products are sold to handle. This was the first use of this product in service. I am experienced with home carbonation and follow the same pressurization and chilling procedure each time. On inspection, the threads on this product engage only about one and a half turns past the O ring, and in testing the failures originated at that first point of thread engagement, consistent with insufficient thread engagement and inadequate material strength to retain the fitting under pressure. The fitting that injured me released explosively on the first quarter-turn of removal. Had it struck slightly lower, it could have caused a serious eye injury rather than a laceration. All three units from this package failed at or below 60 PSI, which suggests a systemic design or manufacturing defect rather than a single defective unit.
