Emergency room Made Feb 24, 2026, sent to the company Feb 26, 2026, published by CPSC Mar 12, 2026
The product, in the report: Crate & Barrel French Kitchen Marble Butter Keeper. This is a marble crock designed to keep butter at room temperature using a water seal. However, the porous nature of the marble material in this specific design appears to facilitate rapid mold growth, even with daily water changes and proper maintenance.
My 5-year-old son suffered a severe illness after using the “French Kitchen Marble Butter Keeper” purchased from Crate & Barrel. Within 6 days of use (following all care instructions with daily water changes), the product developed significant mold growth inside. My son developed a high fever of 106F, bloody stool with green mucus, and abdominal pain. He required three Urgent Care visits and an Emergency Room visit at [REDACTED]. I have since replicated the mold growth under identical conditions and documented it with photographs. This product appears to have a serious safety defect related to its material porosity or design, posing a health risk to children.
