First aid Made May 12, 2025, sent to the company May 14, 2025, published by CPSC Jun 5, 2025
The product, in the report: Product Name: Anchor Hocking 1-cup Glass Measuring Cup Manufacturer: Anchor Hocking Problem: Sparking and embedded metal in microwave safe measuring cup
I used my 1-cup Anchor Hocking glass measuring cup (marked microwave safe) in the microwave. After about 68 seconds, I heard loud popping sounds and saw sparks. I immediately stopped the microwave and removed the cup, burning my finger in the process. Upon inspection, I discovered a piece of metal embedded in the glass, which had melted the surrounding area.
This poses a serious safety risk. There should be no metal in microwave-safe glassware. I have photos showing the embedded object, the damage, and the product label.
Injury: Minor burn to my finger while removing the cup from the microwave.

The product, in the report: 4-cup, glass measuring cup
The consumer indicates that she used her measuring cup to place one cup of Italian food to heat up in the microwave. Approximately two minutes when she was standing in front of the microwave she heard a loud noise coming from the unit. The consumer opened the microwave and saw the measuring cup handle was in flames and had melted off.
The consumer grabbed a potholder and smothered the flames. She then picked up the measuring cup and put it down on the countertop. The potholder caught fire as well, and her countertop has a burn mark. The consumer looked inside the microwave and a burn mark on the bottom and on the side.
The consumer notes that she lightly burned her right thumb in the process. The consumer states that she used the unit daily.
The consumer plans on keeping her measuring cup for at least the next thirty days in case an investigation ensues.

The product, in the report: Anchor Hocking Glass Measuring Cup, 1 cup (8oz) Model Walmart # 1483461 UPX Walmart # 14834
I was using a 1 cup measuring cup manufactured by Anchor Hocking. The cup came out of the cabinet and was at room temperature. I added 1/4 cup olive oil and then 1/4 apple cider vinegar. I started to mix the 2 with a fork and the measuring cup exploded and shot glass at least 10 feet away. I had glass shards in my hand (minor cuts) but more importantly, it could have done serious damage to my eyes. Thankfully I wear glasses.

The product, in the report: Anchor-King 1 cup measuring cup
I have just had an Anchor 1 cup measuring cup explode in my hand! Fragments ranging from 10 cm to 1mm sprayed me, my kitchen counter and my kitchen floor!
I had just melted 1/4 cup of butter in the microwave in the Anchor 1 cup measuring cup. It was in the microwave for 8 seconds. I took it out and as I began to pour the melted butter on my popcorn the cup exploded with a grenade force. Fortunately, for me, as I was pouring and the cup was pointed away from me, only a few small fragments hit me.
If possible, I will forward you a photo of the fragments left - at least the ones big enough to see. My kitchen counter was covered with minute glass particles that only a wet paper towel would find.

First aid Made Jul 6, 2018, sent to the company Jul 16, 2018, published by CPSC Jul 30, 2018
The product, in the report: Anchor Hocking Glass Measuring Cup (I-cup size)
On Wednesday, 4 July 2018, while preparing our family’s July 4th meal, an Anchor Hocking glass measuring cup exploded in my hand, for no apparent reason. I took the cup out of the cabinet and ran it under the tap. When I first put it under, the water was still cool. It gradually warmed up to hot, but our water heater is not set too high. So, it’s not like the water was boiling -- it wasn’t even too hot for my hands -- but while I was holding the glass measuring cup under the tap, it suddenly exploded, sending tiny shards of glass all over my kitchen and into my hand! This was a brand new measuring cup, which had been used maybe 2-3 times before this happened. It had not been dropped and had no cracks or chips. I had to finish cooking my meal with multiple band aids and gloves on my hand! It took two days and a lot of effort using tweezers and a magnifying glass, but I finally got all of the pieces of glass out of my hand. I’m filing this report because 1) It’s not like I put a cold measuring cup into boiling hot water. Like I said, when I first started running the water from the tap, the water was still cool. It gradually warmed up to hot. And 2) Aren’t these glass measuring cups supposed to be tempered glass, able to withstand boiling temperatures and even the oven??? So, how on earth did it shatter under running tap water?? 3) After doing a quick search online to try and figure out why this happened, I noticed there are, literally, hundreds of similar reports about Anchor Hocking and [REDACTED] glass dishes shattering unexpectedly. Supposedly, they changed the formula for the glass from using borosilicate glass to using soda lime glass. And they say they did this so their glass dishes wouldn’t break so easily if dropped, but that’s stupid. If I drop a glass dish on the floor, I EXPECT it to break. That’s just life. But when a glass dish that is supposedly designed for use in extreme temperatures explodes under running tap water, that’s a real problem. Who cares if it falls and breaks? We can’t have glass shattering into our hands and food! It’s a miracle a shard didn’t go into my eyes because I was bent over the sink at the very moment it exploded. Something needs to be done about these dangerous products!

The product, in the report: 2 cup glass measuring cup
I was using a 2 cup glass measuring cup made by Anchor. I had cold butter in it and I was attempting to break it up with a table knife so that it could melt it in the microwave oven. Suddenly, the whole thing shattered.
I was very surprised at how fragile this measuring cup was. It was a newer measuring cup, less than a few years old. I have Pyrex measuring cups that I have had over 40 years, so I am not hard on my kitchen equipment. I have done this same thing with my old measuring cup many times with no problem.
I was not injured, but very easily could have been. Glass was all over the counter and floor. This product is made from cheap glass and not durable enough to hold up with normal kitchen use.

The product, in the report: Anchor Hocking large 4cup measuring cup
Purchased anchor hocking measuring cup approximately three (3) years ago and stored in kitchen cupboard. Then, approximately 1 1/2 years later I heard sound of glass shattering. I searched around my apartment for broken glass, but without seeing anything, which was puzzling, I dismissed it. A few days later I opened my cupboard and there to my amazement all over the shelf was the large anchor hocking measuring cup shattered into many many pieces.

The product, in the report: 8-oz glass measuring cup, red paint markings
My 1-cup glass measurer exploded in the sink with no exposure to any sudden temperature changes (nor is any other glass thing that I own) and no knocking or bumping up against anything. I had used it 4-5 hours earlier when making cookies to measure out the oil needed, placed it in the sink, put cool water in it to soak, and left it alone. I have no idea what caused it to shatter like it did. I’m just glad that no one in my house got hurt.

I was heating some slightly cool water in an Anchor Hocking 16 oz. glass measuring cup in the microwave. I had the microwave timer set for 2 minutes. I bought this measuring cup at Target a couple of weeks ago. I had not used it in the microwave before.

My husband and I were in the bed asleep and I was woken by a loud glass shattering noise. I thought someone was breaking in the house, we got up to check and saw nothing. I decided to cook a cobbler and went to open the cabinet to get my Anchor 4 cup measuring cup out and noticed it was in a million pieces. I have never used it and nothing was hot or cold around the cup. It spontaneously burst.

Hurt, no treatment Made Dec 18, 2015, sent to the company Dec 29, 2015, published by CPSC Jan 21, 2016
The product, in the report: Anchor Hocking 1-cup measuring cup
On December 17, 2015, while washing my 1-cup glass Anchor Hocking measuring cup, it suddenly EXPLODED in my hands for no apparent reason. Shards of glass flew over 8 feet across the room, as well as under the living room sofa, on the kitchen cabinets, kitchen floor, sink and, worst of all, down my garbage disposal! Thank goodness I was wearing a pair of thin latex gloves or my hands would have been severely injured. Even with the gloves on, there were a couple of small abrasions on my hand. Thank goodness, I was wearing my eyeglasses or I’m sure my face would have been injured. The cup had been sitting on the counter for at least half an hour after I used it to pour milk and I did not hit it anywhere on the sink while I was washing it. I was able to get the large shards of glass out of the garbage disposal using kitchen tongs and a flashlight, but the disposal would not work afterwards. Therefore, after a $79 service call to the plumber, who had to totally remove the disposal to clear the glass and reinstall it, it is now working. I still am finding pulverized glass debris in the kitchen and dining areas even after thoroughly cleaning those areas.
From reviewing on-line complaints, this type of occurrence does not seem to be new, and there is a history dating back to 2008 for similar occurrences! It is unconscionable that this problem has not been corrected before someone gets seriously hurt! Needless to say, I will never purchase another Anchor Hocking product and am telling everyone I know not to either.

The product, in the report: Ancor hawking 1 cup measuring cup the model number is 551770L13 and the manufacture is Achor Hocking (I originally spelled it hawking)
Me and my wife purchased a 1 cup glass measuring cup that is manufactured by anchor hawking. When arriving home my wife began to make vegetable lasagna, when she poured cold milk into the measuring cup that was at room temperature, it exploded in to many pieces. Pieces landed in the lasagna, on the floor, all over the counter. When she went to step away to get something to clean up the mess, glass shards went into her foot, the only solid piece left was the handle which remained in her hand.

Purchased new Anchor Hocking 55178OL11 Glass 32 oz Measuring Cup from Wal-Mart for soap-making.
Began heating chunks of soap in microwave in 20 second intervals with about 10 seconds of stirring.
On third heating cycle, the cup detonated inside microwave, with one half jettisoned against microwave door and handle fragmented almost completely.
Had this occurred outside a contained area it would have been considerably dangerous.

a glass measuring cup received this Christmas made by Anchor Hocking, used maybe 6 times , exploded into pieces while inside a closed kitchen cabinet. My husband and I heard a loud “explosion” come from the kitchen on Monday evening, Jan.20th. We wentintokitchen and started looking around to see what the noise was, it had sounded like glass shattering. After checking inside refrigerator, dishwasher ,etc. I started opening kitchen cupboards . Much to my dismay when I opened one cabinet, glass started tumbling out onto the countertops, the toaster got covered in glass, had glass fall actually inside the toaster, assume the suction from opening cabinet caused it to start falling everywhere. What a shock, a complete mess, this cabinet is at face level, I am so grateful this cup didn’t decide to shatter while a person was opening the cabinet., have never seen any of the numerous glass products we have owned over the years do this. After doing a lot of vacuuming and wiping down, everything in the cabinet had to be washed , there were particles of glass everywhere!! I took photos of the glass, we had put as much as possible into a flat cardboard box to be able to clean the cabinet. On Tuesday a.m. I put an inquiry/complaint into Anchor Hocking asking why would this happen, is this product that unsafe? As of this a.m. 48hrs later they have not responded to me, I did get a confirmation e mail immediately from the company saying they would contact me , but I think its been long enough.I don’t want this to happen to anyone else, and will NOT buy a replacement from that company. This could have been very dangerous . I am looking forward to a reply . thank you

The product, in the report: Anchor Hocking Glass 4 Cup Measuring Cup
I was using my Anchor Hocking 4 cup glass measuring cup to warm a mixture of sugar & water. I placed the measuring cup in the microwave for 33 seconds. I took it out of the microwave after the 33 seconds & placed the AH glass measuring cup on my countertop & as I was stirring the sugar water mixture I heard a loud crack noise. I bent down to inspect the glass measuring cup but didn’t see any cracks. I continued to stir my mixture & then the whole glass measuring cup exploded. Glass flew everywhere in my kitchen as did the mixture I was stirring. I don’t understand why this happened since it was only in the microwave for 33 seconds. Thank God that it didn’t explode when I bent down & got really close up to the glass measuring cup because I would be blind right now. The shards of glass would have taken my eyes out.

Hurt, no treatment Made Jan 24, 2013, sent to the company Feb 1, 2013, published by CPSC Feb 25, 2013
The product, in the report: Anchor 8oz glass measuring cup
I purchased a one-cup Anchor Hocking measuring cup and used it for the first time on January 22, 2013. Because the cup is marked safe for microwave use, I believed it was resistant to heat, i.e., safe to rest a spoon used to stir oatmeal inside the cup. The cup exploded. It didn’t crack. It didn’t break. It literally exploded sending glass flying 4-5 feet in all directions. There was not one recognizable piece of the measuring cup remaining. The largest piece of glass was an inch. In addition to chunks of glass scattered all over my kitchen, there were very fine slivers, shards, and glass dust all over the floor and countertop.
Thankfully, I was about 3 feet away and my back was turned when the explosion occurred (although some of the glass hit the back of my head), otherwise, I’m sure a visit to the emergency room would have been required, as the glass would have been embedded in my face and eyes.
I am not interested in getting my money back or in another Anchor Hocking measuring cup; I don’t intend to use their products any longer. However, I do think their glass products have the potential to cause serious bodily harm. There should be a label warning consumers that, even though their glass products are supposedly safe for microwave use, they can explode when exposed to temperature fluctuations.
