The product, in the report: Canopy Easy Care Trash Can, Stainless Steel, 8 Gallon, Foot Petal. The trash can has a black plastic base and lid. Purchased at Wal-Mart.
A 23 month old child was sitting on the floor in her daycare classroom next to a stainless steel 8 gallon Canopy Easy Care Trash Can. The child pushed down on the foot petal and got her fingers between the metal edge of the can and the foot petal. When she withdrew her hand, the metal edge cut into her left pinky finger so deeply that it severed the ligament in the finger. The child was transported to the local Emergency Room and from there was sent to Kosair Children’s Hospital for surgery to repair the torn ligament. After the incident, the trash can was immediately inspected and it was found that the plastic guard that should have been covering the sharp edge was missing. The daycare center has another classroom that uses the exact same trash can so it was also inspected and the guard on that one was only partially in place.
