The product, in the report: Black rectangle surge protector attached to an air conditioner unit outside.
While we were away, the surge protector, Supco SCM 150, connected to an air conditioner unit caught a fire. A section of the siding was burnt and the surge protector was badly damaged. At first, I thought my house was hit by lightning. After a short search through internet, I learned that the surge protector was prone to overheat and catch a fire. In fact, it was recalled by the manufacturer, Supco, this year. My air conditioners were installed in 2011 and 2014 by a local HVAC company in Powhatan, VA. Both of them have Supco SCM 150 attached. I never received any recall notice although there was a recall letter sent by Supco to the local HVAC company. I think it is the HVAC company’s responsibility to inform me of the recall as we, the consumers, do not normally know what kind of surge protectors installed. In addition, Supco would not know we have the recalled product and they would not have a way to communicate with us.
When I called the HVAC company, I was told that they would only replace the recalled products for those customers who have the maintenance contract with them. What about the rest of the consumers who DO NOT have the maintenance contract with them? The HVAC company personnel said that they would not know who they installed the Supco surge protector to. He admitted that the company received the recall letter. However, they did nothing to inform the customers. I even told him that they could’ve sent us an e-mail notification to check the model of the surge protector. He didn’t seem to take any responsibilities. In the end, I was told to contact Supco directly about the faulty product. I am lucky that my house wasn’t totally burnt down and I will be replacing the faulty surge protectors. I am very concerned that there may be many innocent consumers who are not aware of this dangerous surge protector attached on their air conditioners.

No one hurt Made Mar 6, 2019, sent to the company Apr 3, 2019, published by CPSC Apr 17, 2019
The product, in the report: Supco Power Surge Protector connected to my AC unit. Approximately 3x3.5inch black box with Supco SCM150 Type 2 SPD written on it.
On Tuesday February 26, 2019 at 9am I was sitting in my backyard when I heard a loud pop and spark like noises.I turned to look in the direction of that noise and saw flames coming from the side of my house where my AC unit was located. I grabbed my hose and put out the fire only to learn that the fire was started by the Supco 150 power surge protector. While I waited for my AC company to come check this out the fire started up again. At this point I called 911. Needless to say if I had not been home or if this happened in the middle of the night this could have ended in tragedy.
My AC technician told me and I quote “I have installed thousands of these devices and yours is the third fire I have seen.” It scares me to think how long before the thousands he has installed catch on fire.
I came to learn that UL had issued a warning on this product in a public notice on July 29, 2016. It saddens me to think that this product is still in use and can still be purchased on E-Bay.
If you Google- supco surge protector fire- you will see more accounts of this product catching fire.
There should be an immediate recall on this product.

No one hurt Made Jan 2, 2019, sent to the company Feb 5, 2019, published by CPSC Feb 21, 2019
The product, in the report: Supco SCM-150 surge protector located on the main A/C shutoffs on homes. Black in color with an identifying sticker on the front.
We received this call as a structure fire. Upon our arrival, we found a HVAC surge protector that had burnt up on the right side of the house. The homeowner had discharged a dry chemical extinguisher on the area prior to our arrival. The HVAC #2 breaker had tripped and was switched to the off position by T52. Command removed the main breaker in the panel at the HVAC unit itself. We checked inside the house and in the crawl space for extension and found none. There was light scorching on the hardy plank just above the surge protector. There was no smoke inside the house. Car 21 was requested to investigate. Surge protector type Supco SCM-150.

The product, in the report: Supco model SCM60, Type 2 SPD, 120/240V 60HZ single phase
An occupant smelled smoke and upon further investigation, saw smoke in the basement. A neighbor saw fire on the exterior of the house. Fire department units arrived and had an exterior fire in the area of the air conditioner/heat condenser units. The fire investigation revealed the fire was caused by a Supco SCM60 surge protector, which was connected to the air conditioner/heat condenser fuse box and mounted to the exterior of the house. The exterior sheathing burned, which caused smoke to migrate inside the basement.

The product, in the report: Supco SCM150 Surge Protector commonly used on heating and air conditioning systems.
A surge protector that was installed on my air conditioning system approximately 3 years ago started on fire and burned the side of my house. The surge protector is made by Supco and is model number SCM150. I contacted the HVAC company who installed the unit and they said there were recalls on the product, but all I can find are warnings. One of the warnings is from UL under Release No. 16PN-10. This is not a UL listed device, but they acknowledge that the surge protector is a fire hazard. Other HVAC vendors have also sent out their own notices letting customers know that these items are fire hazards and to have them removed.

The product, in the report: Black box approximately 3.5” by 3.5” by 2”. Label has Supco SCM 150 Type 2 SPD
While we were away from home, the surge protector attached to the electrical cut-off switch for our outdoor heat pump caught fire. Fortunately, minimal damage occurred to our house. The device was a Supco SCM 150. An internet search revealed that Underwriter’s Laboratory had issued an alert in 2016 regarding a fire hazard for this product (Release No. 16PN-10). I am unsure of where I should report this, so please forward as necessary. I have photos of the device if needed.

The product, in the report: SUPCO SCM60 SINGLE PHASE SURGE PROTECTOR
On 6/26/2013 I had two SUPCO SCM60 Surge Protectors installed on each of my two [REDACTED] Air Conditioning units. On September 8th 2016 the upstairs air conditioner stopped working- I smelled something burning near the back of the house around 2pm and noticed that the surge protector looked like it had burned, when the technician arrived he believed there may have been some type of power surge that burned out the surge protector - so he replaced it, there was nothing wrong with the air conditioner and no power disruption to any electric in the house. One week later about the same time of day I heard popping coming from the back of the house only to find that the other surge protector was sparking and burned an area on the back of the house. That evening I searched online to see if anyone else had this experience and did see mention of someone claiming that this brand of surge protector caused house fires in two of their homes. I had the technician return to my home to remove both surge protectors. This appears to be a dangerous product which came very close to causing a house fire for me and i’d like you to look into this product. Thank You

The product, in the report: Whole Home Surge Protector
Engine 8, Engine 7, Rescue 7, Ladder 5, Ladder 1, Battalion 2, and Morrisville Pumper 3 were dispatched to a structure fire at 204 Frontgate Drive. While en route, dispatch advised that the fire was called in by a neighbor who stated that an HVAC unit was on fire. I proceeded to the rear of the home and found that there was no active fire. The caller stated that they had extinguished the mulch with a garden hose. I did find superficial smoke and heat damage to the cement board siding of the home and damage to a HVAC power disconnect box. I assigned Rescue 7 the task of checking for tripped breakers in the home’s main panel and also isolation of the circuit for the upstairs air conditioning compressor. Rescue 7 found that the breaker was tripped for HVAC #2. They then turned the breaker off. Engine 8 personnel then opened the cover to the power disconnect box and pulled the fuse. There was minimal damage inside the box, however some of the wiring did show signs of heat related stress. There were wires that had been burnt off as they passed through an accessory hole on the side of the box. Those wires were connected to a surge protector that was mounted to the side of the disconnect. The entire surge protector had burned or melted away leaving nothing but the connection wires. We were able to identify the brand and model of the surge protector by looking at the disconnect for HVAC #1. The homeowner confirmed that there had been a surge protector on each unit. The homeowner was unfamiliar with the surge protector and stated that it had been installed by a company that performed HVAC service in the past. I did a cursory internet search for the surge protector and showed the findings to the homeowner. I advised him to contact his current HVAC company and request that they respond today for repair and further evaluation of both systems. Furthermore, I advised him that he should discuss the need for the surge protector on HVAC #1. The homeowner said that he had recently had a whole home surge protection system installed by Duke Progress Energy.

The product, in the report: Supco SCM150 Surge Protector,120-240v,150k Amps
I believe this commonly installed surge protector is inherently unsafe. It is commonly used to protect HVAC equipment in a power surge situation, however it appears to be prone to starting fires as it does this. Other devices on the market do not have the same design flaw. Our surge protector was tripped earlier this month and resulted in a fire to the exterior of our home. Fortunately our house is brick and so the damage was contained to some charring on the exterior of the house.

The product, in the report: Surge Protector Type 2 SPD
The surge protector was installed by her heating and cooling company when her AC unit was installed about 5 years ago.
The consumer stated that she walked out into her yard and noticed burn mark on a wall adjacent to the electrical box. The height of the burn mark was 12-20 inches. The consumer noticed trail of soot.
The consumer contacted her electrician immediately. The electrician came out and informed the consumer that the surge protector somehow caught on fire.
The consumer contacted the fire marshall. When the fire marshall came out, he informed the consumer that he has investigated 5-6 identical incidents with this product. He informed the consumer that these surge protectors are not supposed to be used outside. He stated that all of the incidents that he investigated with this product occurred when the product was outside in extreme heat.
The fire marshall informed the consumer that the scorch mark on the side of her house probably occurred because there were flames when the fire occurred.
The electrician disconnected the surge protector.
The consumer stated that there are no warnings on the surge protector that informs the users to not use the product outside.

The product, in the report: Supco SCM150, Type 2 SPD,120/140V, 60Hz, Single Phase Surge Protector
In October of 2012, a customer called to inform one of our HVAC service centers that a fire originating in the outside disconnect box of his air conditioning compressor had burned the side of his home. The fire department responded and identified the source as the “Supco SCM150, Type 2 SPD,120/140V, 60Hz, Single Phase Surge Protector.” We reported the claim to our parent company, which took over the investigation and management of the insurance claim. Though we could find no recall on the CPSC site, the center stopped using the Supco surge protectors as a precaution. A little over a year later, we became an independent company after our parent company sold us and we never learned the outcome of their investigation.
Unfortunately, in May of this year, a customer of one of our other centers had a very similar incident and our own investigation found that, again, a Supco SCM150 surge protector was involved. Though we still could find no recall by the CPSC and neither our own parts distributer nor our former parent company reported any other issues, our insurance company did put Supco on notice. However, Supco claimed that they were just the distributor of these surge protectors and that the manufacturer was a company by the name of Sycom. Our insurance company’s investigation was inconclusive and, because the customer did not seek damages from us, the claim was closed. Internally, even though we could not be certain that all Supco SCM150 surge protectors were defective, we did notify our Sourcing Department and recommended to all of our general managers that they stop using the Supco surge protectors.
The last straw occurred yesterday, when a third center reported another fire involving the same Supco SCM150, Type 2 SPD,120/140V, 60Hz, Single Phase Surge Protector. This time, the inspector from the customer’s insurance company concluded that the surge protector was the cause of the fire. Though the first couple of incidents could have been a coincidence, this third incident makes it clear that something is wrong with this product and we need to take the next step. Our Sourcing Department is contacting our suppliers to ensure the Supco SCM150 is completely removed from our supply chain. Though this will ensure that we never again install these surge protectors at our customers’ homes, because we cannot ensure that any we have already installed are replaced as soon as possible, we are also notifying you in hopes that the CPSC will issue a recall and ensure the safety, not only of our customers, but also of any other consumers who may have had these surge protectors installed at their homes. Thank you.
