The product, in the report: Hyper Tough Surge Protector Power Strip with USB-A, USB-C, 8 Outlets, 10ft Extension Cord, Black

I bought a “Hyper Tough Surge Protector Power Strip with USB-A, USB-C, 8 Outlets, 10ft Extension Cord, Black” from Walmart. I went to use it and I noticed that nothing prevented me from accidently inserting an unkeyed electrical plug into two adjacent sockets at the same time.

Made Jun 12, 2025, sent to the company Jun 16, 2025, published by CPSC Jul 1, 2025

The product, in the report: Product Type: Surge Protector / Power Strip Brand Name: Hyper Tough Model Number: WM-20812W (from the label) Manufacturer on Label: KINGTEC (but sold under the Hyper Tough brand) Retailer: Walmart Date Purchased: June 12, 2025 Specs: 15A 125VAC 1875W 60Hz Type 3 SPD VPR 800V Output: 5VDC 2.1A (total) Made in Vietnam Certification: Intertek 5013210, UL 1363 and 1449 Markings on back of device included in photo

I purchased a Hyper Tough surge protector (model WM-20812W) from Walmart on June 12, 2025. Upon first use, it sparked and caught fire while plugging in a device. It caused a burn injury to my wrist through my metal bracelet. I have attached clear photos showing the burn mark on my skin, the damage to the bracelet, and the scorch marks on the surge protector.

This surge protector is labeled as Kingtec on the bottom but was sold under the Hyper Tough brand at Walmart. This incident happened during normal indoor use in a dry area, following all safety instructions.

This product is a serious fire and electrical hazard, and I am reporting it to ensure proper investigation and to prevent injury to others.

The product, in the report: HyperTough 6-Outlet Metal Surge Protector

I plugged in the surge protector into a grounded outlet. The indicator light came on. I proceeded to plug a lamp into the protector. There were some sparks. I removed the lamp plug and tried again. Again, there were sparks. I later tried the lamp plug in a completely different surge protector plugged into the same outlet/circuit. This time, no sparks.
