Hurt, no treatment Made Aug 10, 2026, sent to the company Aug 12, 2026, published by CPSC Aug 26, 2026
The product, in the report: Amazon Basics Rotating 9-Outlet Surge Protector Power Strip with 2160 Joules of surge protection and built-in swivel outlets.
While in use, the Amazon Basics 9-outlet surge protector experienced a catastrophic internal failure. The device suddenly produced loud popping sounds, active electrical sparks, and severe chemical smoke/off-gassing under a minimal load (a ~7-watt low-draw lamp). The plastic housing suffered severe thermal melting and cracked open along the side seam.
The extreme heat scorched and damaged the plastic casings and prongs of connected power adapters plugged into the unit. The resulting toxic fumes and smoke caused immediate respiratory distress in pets in the home (one adult cat and two kittens), requiring emergency monitoring and care, and caused inhalation discomfort and headaches for myself.

No one hurt Made Apr 27, 2024, sent to the company May 8, 2024, published by CPSC May 22, 2024
The product, in the report: Amazon Basics Rectangular 8-Outlet Power Strip Surge Protector, 4,500 Joule - 12-Foot Cord, Black/Green Note, the SKU, Serial number are not listed on the product itself. I no longer have the product box.
I ordered an Amazon Basics Rectangular 8-Outlet Power Strip Surge Protector, 4,500 Joule - 12-Foot Cord, Black/Green on January 24, 2024. After just three months, the surge protector was making a LOUD ELECTRIC BUZZING sound as it appears to have shorted out. I reached out to Amazon, who stated there is no warranty that they will honor and acted as if they were doing me a favor by allowing me to just return it for a partial refund. Had I not been home and this went on fire, I could have lost my house. Amazon had zero cares about this product, did not stand behind it, nor did they even care there was a safety issue with this product.

The product, in the report: AmazonBasics 6 outlet 200 joule surge protector in black
An Amazon Basics 200 joule surge protector caught fire while I was sleeping. Thanks to my dog I woke up before it did more than melt some carpet and was able to extinguish it.

No one hurt Made Feb 5, 2020, sent to the company Feb 27, 2020, published by CPSC Mar 12, 2020
The product, in the report: The product name is:AmazonBasics 6-Outlet Surge Protector Power Strip 2-Pack, 2-Foot Long Cord, 200 Joule - White and it can be found at: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00TP1BWMK/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o02_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 The items are as described, white 6 outlet surge protectors.
I plugged the power strip into a wall outlet and turned it on with no appliances plugged into it. This tripped the breaker, which I reset. When I tried it in a different outlet, the device made a loud popping noise, sparked, and the case was opened by the force of the damage. There was a burning odor and brown smoke/residue on the device and on the counter where it sat. There are reports dating at least back to 2017 that similar incidents occured according to reviews left on the Amazon website.
