The product, in the report: The product is a Luca Convertible Montessori Floor Bed with Rails manufactured and sold by Custom Kids Furniture. My bed is the natural wood, full-size model. According to the manufacturer’s product listing, it is constructed from solid pine wood with a VOC-free, water-based finish and is designed to accommodate a standard full-size mattress measuring 75 inches by 54 inches. The bed features wooden mattress slats, full-length removable safety rails on all four sides, and optional removable legs that allow it to convert from a low-profile Montessori floor bed to a standard-height bed. The product is marketed as a safe, durable sleeping solution for young children transitioning from a crib, with emphasis on its solid wood construction, guard rails, and long-term durability.
Product: Luca Convertible Montessori Toddler Bed
Manufacturer: Custom Kids Furniture -Customkidsfurniture.com
I purchased a Luca Convertible Montessori Toddler Bed in May 2026 for my five-year-old son with special needs.
On July 1, 2026, during normal use, the front wooden safety rail suddenly failed and broke into multiple pieces. The break left sharp, splintered wooden edges exposed in an area where a child sleeps and enters or exits the bed.
Fortunately, my son was not injured, but the failure created an immediate safety hazard. A structural safety component of a bed intended for young children should not fail after only a few months of normal use.
I reported the incident to the manufacturer and provided photographs documenting the failure. The company acknowledged the defect and offered to replace the broken safety rail but declined my request for a refund. Because the failure involved a structural component designed to protect a child, I no longer have confidence in the safety of the product.
My concern extends beyond my family’s experience. If this type of structural failure can occur after such a short period of normal use, I believe it warrants review to determine whether other children may be at risk.
I have retained the broken parts, the bed, photographs, proof of purchase, and all correspondence with the manufacturer.

The product, in the report: Luca Convertible Montessori Toddler Bed | Floor Bed with Rails Full Size in Natural
What happened that made you want to report? I purchased a toddler bed that appears to be unsafe and poorly manufactured. Before I even began assembly, I received multiple splinters just from handling the wooden parts and moving the damaged packaging. The product also has a strong, unpleasant chemical odor, which raises concerns about materials and safety. Given that this is marketed for toddlers, I believe it poses a serious risk to consumers.
What type of product(s) were being used? A wooden toddler bed frame.
Who was using the product(s)? I was handling the product as an adult during unpacking and preparation for assembly. The product is intended for use by a toddler.
How were the product(s) being used? The product was not assembled or used as intended. I was unpacking the box and lightly handling the wooden components to prepare for assembly when the issue occurred.
Were there any injuries that happened or may have happened while using the product? Yes. My partner and I both sustained multiple splinters while handling the wooden parts. Given the condition of the product, there is a high risk that a child could suffer similar or more serious injuries if the product were used.
How did any injuries occur? The injuries occurred due to rough, poorly finished wood surfaces. Simply touching and lifting the components caused splinters to embed in my skin, indicating a lack of proper sanding and finishing. I am afraid to even build the bed for my 18 month old toddler to sleep on
