Hospital admission Made Aug 18, 2025, sent to the company Aug 21, 2025, published by CPSC Sep 5, 2025
The product, in the report: The ladder in question is the Werner LEANSAFE X3 13-ft Reach Type 1A Multi-Position Ladder. Here is the product URL from Lowes: https://www.lowes.com/pd/Werner-13ft-Reach-Height3N1-Multi-Position-Ladder-300lb-Load-Capacity-13ft-Type-IA/1003094360. The Werner Co URL has been changed moved or deleted: https://www.wernerco.com/us/products/ladders/multi-ladders/ALDPSeries/ALDP376.
I purchased the Werner LEANSAFE X3 13-ft Reach Type 1A Multi-Position Ladder from a Lowe’s in Central Florida. As a 180-200lb individual, I was well within the ladder’s 300lb weight capacity, so I trusted it for home improvement tasks. Tragically, while using the ladder, it opened up, causing me to fall and suffer a severe displaced femur fracture. I was rushed to the hospital, where I underwent emergency surgery. The recovery has been grueling. I spent time in a skilled nursing facility after struggling at home, post-surgery. As of today (one and a half years post injury), I’m still in constant pain and can barely walk 50 feet at a time, a stark contrast to my previously independent, active lifestyle. This will likely make me disabled for the rest of my life as a senior citizen. This ladder’s failure has been life-altering, robbing me of my mobility and quality of life. I’m deeply disappointed in its performance, especially given it’s from a reputable brand. I urge others to exercise extreme caution with this product and thoroughly inspect it before use. My family and I are still grappling with the physical, emotional, and financial toll of this incident. It is interesting that that this ladder has been removed from the market.

No one hurt Made Aug 18, 2025, sent to the company Dec 17, 2025, published by CPSC Jan 6, 2026
The product, in the report: 16’- 10” multi-purpose ladder
Within the same year that the ladder was purchased the consumer had trouble while securing it and unlocking it. The consumer experienced the exact same issues mentioned in CPSC Recall# 25-431: The ladders’ locking mechanism can jam and not fully lock into place. The consumer believes that the recall may need to be expanded. He was extremely careful when he used it and was not injured. The pictures on the recall notice that he received from the retailer showed his ladder and not the taller ones included in the recall. After viewing the recall online, he saw that his was not included.

Seen by a doctor or nurse Made Jan 22, 2025, sent to the company Jan 27, 2025, published by CPSC Feb 10, 2025
The product, in the report: Werner 6-foot aluminum ladder. The top cap and pail shelf are red plastic. On the top cap, the stamp says DES.PAT D310.884 The next line says D340.773 5,259,480 PaT Pending. There is a UL label that says Metal Ladder, then Listed, then SA2932, then AC8593, then cautions about using the ladder around electricity. There are some other labels on the ladder, but they are all faded and unreadable. I bought this probably in 1998 or 1999.
I was using a 6-foot Werner ladder to get something out of the loft of our [REDACTED] Shed. When I stepped onto the ladder to get down, it buckled out from under me, causing me to fall onto my head and ribs. Fortunately, I had a cycling helmet on at the time, or I probably would have been knocked unconscious. I suffered bruised ribs that took several weeks for recovery.

The product, in the report: Ladder
Caller stated that the ladder’s upper section failed knocking him off the ladder causing him to fall. He stated that his body is still sore but no major injuries. He stated that the locking mechanism for the ladder did not work. Caller returned the ladder to the store.
The manufacturer was contacted and requested pictures and witnesses for the report but he didn’t have the information because he was alone when the incident occurred. He was informed that they would provide a replacement.
Caller feels that this ladder is a safety hazard and should be reported.

Emergency room Made Sep 8, 2020, sent to the company Oct 7, 2020, published by CPSC Nov 10, 2020
The product, in the report: Werner 6 ft. ladder Model 366
On Monday, Aug. 31 2020, I went into my garage with my Werner step ladder to check for space in the attic for storage. I always check to see that the ladder is balanced and level. I was standing on the ladder one second, and the next I was on my back on the concrete floor in excruciating pain. I was taken by ambulance to the hospital and had Xrays and CAT scan. I suffered injury to my back, my right elbow and my left leg. I may also have bruised my right lung because I have trouble breathing. Fortunately, I broke no bones. I am a 77 year old woman and live alone. I am very cautious about breaking my bones. I purchased this ladder 8/04/14. It is only used infrequently to change light bulbs, batteries and to paint one room. I was blaming myself for the injuries, until my daughter came in from the garage and told me the leg of the ladder was bent. I think this is a defective product. I think you should look into this. No matter what, the leg on a ladder should not bend. I have written an email to Werner, but have not heard from them yet. I am in constant pain for the last week and on muscle relaxers, [REDACTED] and Naproxin. I could have broken my back or my hip and ended up in a nursing home for the rest of my life.

Hurt, no treatment Made Dec 11, 2019, sent to the company Jan 10, 2020, published by CPSC Jan 27, 2020
The product, in the report: metal attic ladder with wooden lid
The consumer moved into the home in June 2015 and the ladder was already in the home.
The 6’ tall, 190 lbs., consumer was coming down the ladder, when the last section that folds down gave away. The hinge on the left hand side of the last section broke. The consumer landed on a hardwood floor in the hallway, which had a carpet runner. The consumer sustained a sore back. He applied a heating pad and felt better the next day.
There was a forged round piece of metal and half of that made a clean break, which lead to this incident.
The ladder was used once a month or less.
The consumer checked on-line and saw various links for lawsuits.
The ladder did not appear to be included in any CPSC Recalls.

No one hurt Made Mar 3, 2019, sent to the company Mar 13, 2019, published by CPSC Mar 27, 2019
The product, in the report: Werner s2210 attic ladder. The ladder folds up at mid point. Its the hinge at this mid point which has snapped and broken. The hinges were riveted on at the factory making replacement diffacult. Also, no replacement hinges are offered.
I have a Werner Attick ladder model s2210.
One of the fold up hinges has cracked and broken thru. It is made of pot metal.
I have seen online many others have had this problem and Werner has not recalled.
The ladder is useless now for climbing and a absolute safety hazard to try and climb.
I’ve looked online for replacement hinges, but none are offered.
The ladders need to be recalled to protect consumers.

The product, in the report: ladder
The submitter is reporting the ladder for posing a fall and injury hazard. He states that the hinges are defective and cause the ladder to collapse.
He was climbing down the ladder when it collapsed due to the defective hinges. He weighs 168 lbs. and the ladder’s weight capacity is 300 lbs. He indicated that he is going to therapy to treat his hip flexor and the incident aggravated the existing injury.
He contacted the firm via online form (reference # [REDACTED]) and didn’t hear back. He called the firm today and the Rep. informed him that they purchased the brand in 2006 but they don’t have parts for the ladders manufactured before 2006. The submitter was told that someone would get back to him within 3 days about his injury claim.
He believes the ladder needs to be recalled and he found many reports online regarding this model.

While climbing up, a properly installed attic ladder; a hinge snapped. After reading several reviews online I discovered that there are multiple complaints about the same issue for the same make and model of this ladder. The ladder is a Werner S2208, MK2. It appears that a class action settlement was brought against the company and judgment was found in favor of the consumers. Unfortunately, the class action deadline was in 2014 yet it appears many consumers are suffering injuries and losses due to a poorly fabricated and unsafe product.

Critical ladder hinge is made from cheap pot metal and is a ticking time bomb for death or serious injury. This severe design and manufacturing defect justifies a mandatory recall.
I have since learned that there was a class action settlement (claim deadline 1/21/2014), but no recall or notice. If there had been a recall then I would have known about this deadly defect and taken action before today.

Bought a Werner MT-22 ladderfrom Home Depot. Hadn’t used it for 20 minutes when one of the ladder legs snapped causing me to fall and injure myself. I could not stand, had a couple of instances if going into shock and spent a few weeks on crutches before I could manage to walk and am still recuperating. I went to an urgent care facility where x-rays showed I had no broken bones but lots of swelling.
I found out that the Werner ladder was a Chinese knockoff of an American ladder built by [REDACTED]. Whereas the [REDACTED] ladder uses thicker aircraft grade aluminum and welds all rungs and brackets, the Werner ladder is thin aluminum and all rungs and brackets are pop riveted.

My wife had just gone up into our attic and I was headed up my Werner attic ladder (S2208) when the last two rungs of the ladder sheared off at the hinge. Fortunately I wasn’t up higher and my wife had already ascended or someone could have been seriously injured. However, with my wife trapped in the attic and having a narrow entry space, having to bring in a ladder and having her climb over the banister to get out, put her at risk. I contacted the company and they said that the lawsuit about this model ladder had been settled and that are at no obligation to replace this ladder even though it is CLEARLY A DEFECTIVE PRODUCT and put lives at risk.

This caller is reporting her attic ladder purchased from a home improvement store in Oregon in 2005.
January 2nd, 2016 the caller’s husband was putting boxed Christmas decorations away in the attic when the final trifold area that should act as a stabilizer broke causing him to fall to the floor.
He injured his tailbone and left arm but was not seen by a medical physician.
The caller and her husband returned to the place of purchase January 6th, 2016, they spoke with [REDACTED] at extension [REDACTED] who contacted the manufacturer.
The manufacturer advised the caller and her husband that since the ladder is ten years old, there is no written warranty and no recall for this model then there is nothing that will be done for them. The caller and her husband are reporting this unit as a fall safety hazard. The caller is asking whether this model can be recalled and whether a repair at the manufacturer expense could be the remedy.

The product, in the report: Werner Steel Attic Ladder Model # S2208
I have a Werner steel attic ladder which was installed on 11/4/06. The other day I was putting the Thanksgiving Day decorations in the attic when on the way down, the fold up/down 2 step part of the ladder broke at the point of pivot. The half round piece with a bolt going thru it to allow this piece to flip up or down broke causing the 2 step piece to collapse and me twisting and falling to one side. I called Werner about the problem and was told that this is a “new Werner company” and they could not help me with the problem since they had no specs etc. from the old Werner company. All I wanted was a replacement of the ladder assembly so I could go into the attic. I have since bought a replacement attic ladder and am awaiting a contractor to install it.
I bring this to your attention to alert you to a possible safety issue with the attic ladder and prevent someone else from falling. I was lucky.

The representative told me that no parts were able as the company that made my ladder in 2005 had been purchase but the “new” company had no history on that ladder including parts.
When I searched the internet, I later learned that model had numerous problems with broken hinges and injuries. In fact, a class action lawsuit had been settled in January 2014. At no time did the company representative tell me of those problems and that the ladder was unsafe for use.

The product, in the report: three section drop down attic ladder
We recently moved to a townhome. The garage has a drop down ladder with access to the attic area. The attic area is large with plenty of room for storage....it is also the where the cable service main connect is positioned (currently [REDACTED]). The ladder (Werner) is three sections and when deployed to the garage is our access to the attic. We have made multiple trips up the ladder with various items. The ladder is rated for 300#. My weight is 205#’s. A few weeks ago I was carrying a picture frame (Plastic) . I was standing on the second rung when that section failed and dropped me to the concrete floor. I managed to stay on my feet but hit my shin on the third rung still hanging from the attic. Was not a serious injury (no blood) but did get a substantial goose egg on my shin and some pain. However, I consider myself lucky because I could have hit my chin, teeth, nose or face in general on the upper rungs when I dropped to the floor. I contacted Werner with the Tel. # on the ladder (1-888-523-3370) and talked to a Customer Support Professional who’s first question was “Were you hurt or injured” and I said not seriously but did hit my shin. She apologized and inferred that they would replace the ladder and requested pictures of the failed ladder for them to process the claim. I complied and sent several pictures to my Customer Support person who said she would be my main contact with Werner. I sent the pictures to her and she acknowledged with an Email that she was passing the information on for review. That Email was dated June 09, 2015. I waited until June 21, when I sent my contact a second Email with additional pics and said I was still waiting for a reply! Her reply is shown below: Hi [REDACTED], Thank you for your patience. I have checked this with the management and this Model number S2210 is the steel attic ladder designed and manufactured by a different company, this company is no longer in business. The product was discontinued back in 2007 and there are no replacement parts available for the ladder. However, as a valued customer, we are offering a $50.00 Home Depot gift card toward purchasing a new replacement ladder. This payment is meant as a customer service gesture. If you agree with this, please reply back with your complete information for us to proceed with the GC process. Complete Name Phone# Complete address: Thank you! The product, in the report: Werner Attic Ladder Model 2210, Mark 7 (63301-10, RevE )
The Werner Attic Ladder Model S2210, Mark 7 (63301-10, Rev E) is installed in my house. While putting away the Christmas decorations, the ladder jerked under me as I was climbing it, but I did not lose my balance. It then wouldn’t close correctly. Examining it, I noticed the right inside hinge was broken. This hinge holds the top two sections of ladder together. I was extremely lucky that the entire ladder did not break away while I was on it.
I discovered that Werner is aware of defective hinges in this ladder model and previously settled a class action lawsuit on this issue. However, upon contacting them, their response was that the “Mark 7” version of the Model 2210 was not part of the settlement. Furthermore, they would not provide replacement parts and my only option was to continue to use this ladder and risk injury or replace it at my expense.

A Werner Steel Attic Ladder S2208 Mk2 broke at both lower hinges while climbing up to the attic. The hinges appear to be of an aluminum or similar casting and are not steel. I’ve never come close to the 300lb load rating.

The Werner S2210 Attic Ladder was installed professionally in 2006 and has been used several times per year since then. On November 22 2014 I used the ladder to get Christmas Decorations out of the attic. The first time i went up and down the ladder just fine but the second time I went to climb the ladder it broke at a lower hinge causing me to fall. I began to research replacement parts from Werner only to discover this ladder has been the subject of several class action law suits for faulty construction. Werner has discontinued to make this ladder. That does not help people like me that are not aware of the defects until the ladder break while in use and cause injury. This ladder should be recalled.

On April 15, 2014 my husband fell onto the cement garage floor when the hinges on the attic ladder he was ascending broke causing the bottom third of the ladder to completely break off. He was transported by ambulance to the hospital for open reduction internal fixation of left tibia fracture (fractured left tibia & fibula below the knee & left tibia above the ankle- he has a rod & three screws). In addition, he has numerous bumps and bruises as well as severe back pain which may be attributed to fractured ribs. He was discharged from the hospital on April 17, 2014. He is non-weight bearing for a minimum of 6 weeks postoperatively and unable to work. The attic ladder is a Werner SS210 Mk 2 rated for 300 lbs. My husband weighs 235 pounds. The ladder folds into thirds up into the ceiling. The bottom third of the ladder complete broke away/off the ladder when the hinges broke while my husband was ascending the ladder. The hinges on the middle section of ladder broke as well; however it still hung precariously by two straps. I had a friend cut off the dangling middle section of the ladder so that no one would be further hurt by it. From information obtained from the internet it appears that the pot metal hinges on this ladder are known to break; however no recall has been issued. These ladders are extremely dangerous and should have been recalled.
I have photos of the defective product and my husband’s injuries; however your website will not allow me to upload them.

The product, in the report: Werner Model S2210 steel overhead pull-down attic ladder
A Werner Model S2210 pull-down attic ladder was installed in my newly constructed home approximately 8 or 9 years ago. This ladder is used to access minor attic storage areas and is only used approximately 5 or 6 times a year. Approximately 3 weeks ago while descending the ladder, the bottom hinges both sheared and the lower section of the ladder broke completely off. Luckily I was hanging on and was able to pull myself back up and was not injured. Since that event, I’ve read about numerous complaints regarding this Werner model and the failures are all related to the inferior pot metal used in the hinges, with many individuals suffering injuries.
In light of these complaints and the dangerous nature of this defect, obviously these ladders need to be immediately recalled. Unsuspecting consumers could be seriously injured or killed when these ladders fail.

The product, in the report: Werner S2210 attic ladder
While descending my approximately 6 year old Werner attic ladder, model S2210, the lower left hinge on the bottom section snapped loudly. I stumbled from the second step, but managed to catch myself, and was not injured. There are numerous broken hinge complaints on the internet re: the S2208 and S2210 ladder models.
The hinge appears to be cast from “pot” metal. My experience in maintenance and manufacturing tells me that that is not the proper material to make important weight bearing components of.
The ladder is installed properly, and has a 300 lb. weight rating. I weigh approximately 190, and can confirm that the ladder has never been overloaded.
I called Werner to complain, and they are offering a $100 coupon, however, it will cost me approximately $200 to replace the ladder in kind if I install it myself. Thanks

The product, in the report: Werner 300lb Steel Overhead Attic Ladder
2003 Werner Co. Made in China Attic Ladder, part# 62460-02, model# S2210 MK 2. Call [REDACTED] for service. Ladder is rated 300lb capacity but lower right swing hinge broke in half suddenly and without any prior signs, warnings, or indicators of a defect under a total load of 225lb. Break sent climber holding only a tape measure from second step to floor so suddenly and off balance that tape measure was dropped to avoid injury from fall. Swing hinge broke in half without any stress marks or twisting of metal indicated. Steel used for hinge appears to be of very poor quality and not strong enough for 300lb rated ladder. It is cast steel that broke like china would under the same type of load. Broken hinge has a dull grainy appearance inside of break area.

The product, in the report: 10’ 3” attic ladder
(9/30/2012) The consumer stated that she was coming down her attic ladder, which is located inside her garage. Approximately at the 3’ foot section of the ladder, the consumer stated that it gave out. The consumer was dangling mid-way. In order to get down safely the consumer swung one of her legs to a near by stool and got ahold of it. The consumer was able to balance herself on the stool and make her way down to the floor safely. The consumer stated that she did not receive any injuries.
Consumer contacted the manufacturer by telephone and was informed that the ladder was mfr’ed by the old Werner company and parts were no longer available. The Werner company rep, [REDACTED], advised her that Werner would send a $200 gift card for Lowe’s or Home Depot towards the purchase of a replacement ladder. Werner company followed this up with a letter (see attached). When I asked how a contractor would be paid she stated that Werner company could instead send me a $100 gift card towards replacement and pay by reimbursement up to $100 towards the labor cost. After more thought I again contacted [REDACTED] and asked about reimbursement for labor as well as the mentioned $200 gift card towards product replacement. She then stated that they would send $200 towards replacement and reimburse up to $150 towards the cost of labor. However, a new letter would be sent stating that Werner company faxed the letter, sent the gift cards and as of this writing, consumer is awaiting reimbursement for the cost of labor and some materials for removal/new installation of an attic ladder (see atttached documentation).

The product, in the report: metal, pull down, attic ladder (located in the garage)
The 170 lbs., consumer was climbing the ladder and one of the pot metal hinges broke on the ladder. The consumer was halfway up the ladder at the time, but he did not fall off of it. The consumer was able to get off of the ladder without any injuries. The ladder has a 300 lbs. weight capacity
(9/7/2012) The consumer called the mfr. and explained the problem to a rep. The mfr’s rep. told the consumer that they could not replace the hinge, because there was a problem with the metal hinges for these ladders. The rep. told the consumer that they would send him a coupon for $100. and the consumer accepted that offer. Nothing else transpired.
The consumer searched the Internet to see if there was any information on this ladder. He found that other people had experienced similar problems with these ladders and that a class action law suit had been filed against the mfr of these ladders.
(9/14/2012) The consumer did not receive the his coupon from the mfr., so he called them to follow up. The rep. (name unknown) told him that the coupon had been placed in mail on 9/14/2012.
The consumer believes that these ladders present a substantial safety hazard and that the mfr. knows about it based on his conversations with them and the information that is available on the Internet.

The screw holding the hinge to my Werner S2210 attic ladder broke off last week. I called Werner who told me the ladder was made by old company who has gone bankrupt. Werner offered me $100 towards a new ladder at Home Depot. I declined and started searching online for info. I found multiple threads on same issue with these ladders. What is the CPSC doing to recall these ladders?

The product, in the report: Werner Attic Ladder S2208
While coming out of my attic Sunday 4-1-12 I was surprised to have my Werner S2208 ladder collapse under me and I went for an uncontrolled ride to the floor. When I got up I found the bottom hinges had sheared and the bottom portion of the ladder was laying on the floor. The top portion was still attached to the structure of the house but it had been violently bent and took some coaxing just to get what was left of the ladder to close partially. I use this ladder a few times a year and have never had any reason before to think it would fail like this. I looked on the Werner website about contacting them for replacement and they specifically say they do not warranty any of their products on their page http://parts.wernerco.com/Home/Support

Attic Ladder hinges broke. Fortunately I detected this before I was seriously injured.
There are many reports of similar incidents that HAVE resulted in serious injury.
A call to the manufacturer resulted in a legal response indicating that I needed to sign some kind of waiver to move forward. The customer service agent claimed that the company originally producing the ladder had gone out of business, but the people and assets were transferred, along with the brand name to a “new” company. That sounds like an organization that is shedding liability via a reorganization.

Werner Attic Ladder, lower hinges broke approximately six months after purchase in 2006 and were replaced by manufacturer. (These were standard hinges)
On January 3rd both hinges halfway up ladder broke making it necessary for caller to attempt to stay on ladder which resulted in his twisting his back. Caller sought no medical treatment for his back and does not intend to seek any.
The hinges that broke on January 3rd are much more complex than the lower one’s that broke in 2006/2007 timeframe but they still broke in half.
Caller contacted the manufacturer today, January 4th, 2012, spoke with [REDACTED] and was told that he would receive a $100 check to compensate for the second set of hinges breaking.
Caller would like to have this ladder recalled, public to be made aware and would like this ladder replaced at manufacturer expense with a ladder that has stronger hinges with a better design. Caller notes that the hinges on this ladder are made of cast aluminum and should be made of steel to support consumers going up and down them.
