Emergency room Made Sep 9, 2026, sent to the company Sep 11, 2026, published by CPSC Sep 25, 2026
The product, in the report: Gorilla collapsible/multi\-position ladder- 18ft
I was working on a job site and using a Gorilla collapsible/multi-position ladder as part of my normal work duties. While I was on the ladder, one side of the ladder unexpectedly released and dropped because the locking mechanism failed to remain securely engaged. The sudden movement caused the ladder to jolt downward on one side, throwing me off balance and causing me to fall.
There was no warning that the locking mechanism was going to fail as I secured it like I always do. I am reporting this incident because what appears to have been a failure of the ladders locking mechanism resulted in a serious fall broken back , concussion and significant injuries that continue to affect my health, career, income, and everyday life.
The product involved was a Gorilla collapsible/multi-position ladder equipped with locking mechanisms that are intended to secure the ladder in position while it is being used.
I was personally using the ladder at the time of the incident. I was using it in connection with my work on a job site and performing my normal job-related duties.
The ladder was being used as a work ladder to access an elevated area inspecting a leak. While I was on the ladder, I was relying on the ladders locking mechanisms to keep both sides securely locked in position and support me during normal use.
Without warning, the locking mechanism on one side failed or disengaged, causing that side of the ladder to suddenly drop. The ladder became unstable immediately, causing me to lose my balance and fall.
I suffered serious injuries as a result of the fall, including a concussion and fractures to two vertebrae in my back.
These injuries have not simply gone away. I continue to experience significant back pain as well as symptoms associated with the concussion, including brain fog and difficulty concentrating and maintaining focus.
The injuries have affected both my professional and personal life. My career as a field project manager requires me to be able to visit and manage job sites, concentrate, make decisions, coordinate employees and subcontractors, solve problems, document work, and handle multiple responsibilities at the same time. The physical pain and cognitive difficulties I have experienced since the accident have made these responsibilities substantially more difficult.
My career progression has stalled, and the limitations caused by these injuries have affected my ability to work and earn at the level I was capable of before the accident. I am continuing to lose income and professional opportunities as a result.
The accident has also affected my quality of life. I continue to deal with pain and the physical limitations associated with the injuries to my back, along with difficulty focusing and the brain fog associated with the concussion.
The injuries occurred when the locking mechanism on one side of the Gorilla ladder unexpectedly failed while I was using the ladder. When that side suddenly dropped, the ladder jolted and became unstable, causing me to fall.
The fall resulted in significant impact to my body and caused fractures to two vertebrae in my back as well as a concussion. Since the accident, I have continued to experience substantial pain, cognitive difficulties, and limitations that have affected my ability to work and perform normal activities.
Prior to this incident, I was working in a demanding project-management position that required both physical activity in the field and the mental ability to manage complex construction projects. Since the accident, the combination of my back injuries, ongoing pain, concussion symptoms, brain fog, and difficulty concentrating has negatively affected my ability to perform at the same level.
This was not a minor incident or temporary inconvenience. The failure of the ladders locking mechanism resulted in serious injuries that continue to have financial, professional, physical, and personal consequences for me.

The product, in the report: Gorilla Ladder WorkPlatform Model GLA-47WP Product overview from Home Depot Website follows: Get the most stable, versatile, comfortable and portable work platform available from Gorilla Ladders. The redesigned Slim-Fold Work Platform offers a sturdy work space designed to go wherever you need it. With a wide, 47.25 in. x 12 in. standing area with a non-slip surface and non-marring feet, this platform is built to help you get the job done. Perfect for painting, hanging drywall, changing light bulbs or even as a handy work bench, it folds down to just 3.25 in. thin and weighs only 11 lb. for easy storage and transportation. With Gorilla Ladders, you can always climb with confidence.
I was using my new Gorilla Ladders brand Gorilla Slim Fold Work Platform Model GLA-47WP, which I think is a Home Depot brand. I had older model that was not slim fold, so I thought this would be better version, that was not as bulky, since it was “slim fold”. But when I was opening the work platform to use in my house to check my light fixture in the basement, when you open the legs and rotate them to lock in place, if you are not careful or have not experience what I experienced in using this product you will crimp/crush your fingertips painfully. What I think is dangerous is that each pair of legs have two sets of cross bars. The cross bar closest to the rotation point is where if you are not careful you will crimp/crush your fingers in opening the legs of this work platform to lock the legs in. It was extremely painful for an adult male hand fingers, so if your children or wife should think to use it, their hands/fingers are smaller and it was extremely painful when I crimp/crush my fingertips. That cross bar also serves as a support brace to the platform, so it is basically as you rotate the legs to use, it acts like a clamp. The problem is, is that naturally when you open this platform ladder product you would naturally place your hands/fingers of your hand right there to hold the platform steady to pull up the legs. So if you are distracted or not aware of this design flaw before, you will definitely crimp/crush your fingers. Please, please look into this. It was extremely painful and I don’t allow my kids or wife to touch it, and have placed a sticker that says “Finger hazard, do not place hand here”, in case they do when I am not at home.
