First aid Made Oct 24, 2018, sent to the company Nov 1, 2018, published by CPSC Nov 16, 2018
The product, in the report: Adjustable Bases, Queen 2015; 2018 Models Designer Moveable Base 4AM826 (2015) Prodigy 2.0 +Lumbar R-132 (2018)
Two Leggett & Platt Adjustable Base (Queen) purchased and installed in our residential home in 2015 and 2018. Both my husband and I have been suffering from symptoms that made us feel ill, after purchasing these pieces of furniture: extreme fatigue, headaches, eye problems, leg cramps, balance problems, heart problems, and severe sleeping problems.
We decided to unplug the adjustable bases fearing they were both producing radiation. We measured the radiation produced by both adjustable bases and determined that they are producing between 2000-9000 times the allowable amount of radiation for a household product coming in contact with our skin, organs, chest, head and legs.
We carefully recorded each reading taken from immediately above our 13.5 inch thick mattresses with the adjustable bases plugged in. Readings were between 1000-2000 miligaus using a DT-1130 Meter. We notified the Manufacturer this morning at [REDACTED} [REDACTED] was supposed to call us back and never did. Message left with [REDACTED] -Adjustable Care Center Receptionist.
Please take immediate action to review the EMF hazards we are reporting. Hundreds of thousands of U.S. Citizens have these in their homes. We consider this to be a life threatening issue. My husband and I were so sick this past two months we prepared to die, making preparations for our impending deaths. We have digital photos of our EMF readings and a collective series of photos showing the readings spread across the top of each adjustable base. No one hurt Made Jan 30, 2016, sent to the company Feb 9, 2016, published by CPSC Feb 24, 2016
The product, in the report: Leggett & Pratt adjustable mattress base, Premier model P-232; currently marketed as Premier Furniture Style
Leggett & Platt adjustable mattress base, Premier model P-232; now marketed as Premier Furniture Style. Received on 12/15/2014.
The control box for the base has a battery backup system comprised of two 9V alkaline batteries to allow the base to be lowered in the event of a power outage. The batteries are not designed to be recharged, nor is there any mention in the manual about any sort of recharge capability.
There was an extremely loud popping noise that occurred that I was unable to attribute a source to, followed by another within the next few days. The exact time period it occurred was a couple weeks prior to 2/16/2015, so under 2 months from receipt.
On 2/16/2015 I needed to completely power down the control boxes, including removing the backup batteries. When I went to remove the backup batteries I found that they had exploded inside the battery holder. That explained the very loud pops that I heard a couple weeks earlier that I was unable to determine the cause of.
Since I have two bases, and the exact same thing happened to both of them, I suspected something amiss with the control box. When I checked the backup battery connection with a multimeter I found that whenever the control box had AC power it was sending 28V into the backup batteries. In effect, continuously attempting to charge alkaline batteries that are not intended to be recharged.
There is nothing in the manual about recharging the backup batteries. In fact, the 9V alkaline batteries that were installed came with the base explicitly for use as backup batteries.
Since I was already dealing with Legget & Pratt customer service to replace a motor that failed I notified the customer service agent what I found. I disconnected the battery backup on my bases to prevent any further problems. I don’t know if there have been any updates to the bases / control boxes since then.
Feb 16, 2015, is the date I was dealing with customer service about the failed motor and discovered the exploded batteries. The actual battery explosions where a couple weeks prior.

No incident, no one hurt Made Aug 25, 2015, sent to the company Nov 12, 2015, published by CPSC Nov 27, 2015
The product, in the report: S-cape® Adjustable Base; queen size; SKU # 29703394 The consumer found the following number “0612P01255628” on the manual of the S-cape® Adjustable Base.
The consumer purchased a queen size S-cape® Adjustable Base and a mattress (each sold separately). The consumer is filing a report on the S-cape® Adjustable Base for safety concerns.
The consumer states the S-cape® Adjustable Base did not come with a frame to prevent children or pets to go underneath and this presents a safety hazard because if the “Level” button on the remote control is pressed a child or pet can be injured or killed. The consumer is aware that pressing the “Level” button a second time will stop the bed from moving but she still believes there is a safety hazard and a frame should come with the bed.
On 8/14/15 (approximately) the consumer visited the retail store (700 S 72nd St, Omaha, NE 68114) to inform them about her safety concerns and spoke with the manager (name unknown). The consumer is upset because she was not told when she purchased the base that the S-cape® Adjustable Base should be used with a frame. The manager told the consumer 30 days has passed and the consumer cannot return the bed but he would send the information to upper management and someone would contact her. The consumer has called the retail store twice to get an update on the matter but no one has returned her phone call as of today, 8/25/15.
The consumer states on the firm’s website (www.lpadjustablebases.com/s-cape-base.asp) it indicates that the S-cape® Adjustable Base does not come with the frame and should be used with the frame. The consumer states this information is not provided in the manual. The manual only indicates that children and pets should not go under the base. The consumer believes the firm should put a caution label on the base or manual to inform consumers that the base should be used with a frame or the firm should sell the frame with the bed.
The consumer has not contacted the firm but plans to. The consumer reports no incidents or injuries.
The consumer added she spoke with [REDACTED] in the customer care dept at Leggett & Platt, and she explained her concerns...The representative said they only manufacture the frame and she needed to contact the store where she purchased it...[REDACTED] said they’ve had years and years of service on this frame and no has ever complained before.

No one hurt Made Jul 17, 2013, sent to the company Jul 25, 2013, published by CPSC Aug 8, 2013
The product, in the report: Base for Adjustable Bed and electronic controllers
I own an adjustable bed that has two bases that lift a king size mattress by head and foot, plus have a massage feature. The bed is approximately 2 to 3 years old. The controllers for the bed have a plug that comes from the outlet into a control box (2 boxes total) and out of the control boxes into motors into the adjustable base. The controllers are controlled by a wireless remote control. Last week, a ball had rolled under my bed and I reached under to scoop it out. In the process of reaching for the ball, I had to move wires, which were placed loosely on the floor. As I moved one of the wires, sparks came out of one of the controller. I immediately unplugged the bed and contacted the company who sold me the mattress who sent out a service technician. The technician examined the controller and noted that the wire leading to the bed, just as it exists the controller was exposed. He explained he would contact the manufacturer, Leggett & Platt regarding the issue. He called today and explained the company would not cover the part as they did not deem it to be a manufacturer’s defect. I had called the Leggett & Platt myself after being surprised that they would not take responsibility and were not concerned over the safety issue on this and other bed bases they have sold. The agent explained to me that they carefully inspect the wires before the bed leaves. I stated that even if that were true, it does not mean one could not wear out. Her position was that it could only wear out if it were pulled on. I explained that since the bed was installed, the wire sit there and the only pulling that could occur would be from the lifting of the mattress. She explained that it would then be the installer’s responsibility to properly place the controller. I explained that if the location was so sensitive for proper and safe operation that there should be a mounting location to avoid the potential problem and allow slack in the wire to properly lift. Furthermore, even if the installer did located the controller box on the floor at time of delivery, consumers would likely clean or otherwise go under (such as to retrieve a ball) and the wires would be randomly moved without becoming taunt and further there are no warnings to the consumer as to the danger of not having proper amount of slack to allow the bed to adjust up. Notwithstanding, I am not convinced that the wires became exposed due to improperly designed or manufactured controller. Leggett & Platt’s consumer support division was condescending and dismissive when I called with the issue. I am deeply concerned over the safety of this defect, whether manufactures, design or information, as the spark could start a fire on the carpet the controller sits on, the wood the base is mainly constructed of on. Luckily a rare instance of having to reach under the bed disclosed the problem as it could have easily done the same while adjusting the bed when there would be no warning of a likely fire risk while on the bed or sleeping. I may be reached at [REDACTED] should you need further information or if you’d like to inspect the defective unit. Manufacturer’s contact number is: 800-888-3078 x 2 and the serial number to my bed base is GA652573.
