The reports, as CPSC published them

Reports people made to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. CPSC publishes each one after sending it to the company named, and doesn’t guarantee they’re accurate. A report isn’t a recall.

Each report is the words of the person who made it, as CPSC published them. The company’s comments, where CPSC published any, are set apart as the company’s own.

  1. Death

Made Jul 15, 2024, sent to the company Jul 26, 2024, published by CPSC Aug 9, 2024

The product, in the report: Medline Bed Assist Bar with Storage Pocket, and Height Adjustable Bed

My elderly mother’s entire right arm became wedged between the rail and the mattress, close to the box spring. She fell to her knees and died with her face buried in blankets wadded up at the side of the mattress where she had fallen. The rail basically had her in an arm bar, as her arm was trapped all the way up to her shoulder. I found her dead with her face stuffed in bedding where the rail met the bed.

Made Jun 25, 2024, sent to the company Jul 10, 2024, published by CPSC Jul 25, 2024

The product, in the report: Medline bed assist rail

I received a notice today from Amazon to report a recall on an item I purchased for my mother, the Medline bed assist rail. In August 2021, the rail malfunctioned and caused her to fall hard. She had to enter a nursing home where her condition continued to deteriorate. In May 2022, she began showing symptoms of sepsis. The physician determined that the fall was hard enough to cause the failure of a mesh sling installed after a hysterectomy to support her bladder. Over the months since the fall, her bladder had descended to her colon where a fistula formed that caused feces to enter her bladder. She died painfully a few days later.

Made Jun 2, 2024, sent to the company Jun 5, 2024, published by CPSC Jun 20, 2024

The product, in the report: Bedside rail to assist getting out of bed

I rolled over in my sleep, my right arm slid between device and mattress and bedrail , head followed trapping between mattress and device body followed holding me down. Could barely yell for help which I did and husband who could barely walk came around and pulled me out. Saved my life! I stuffed large pillows between mattress and device to prevent happening again.

The product, in the report: Medline bed assist bar with storage bag sold in Amazon

I purchased the Medline bed assist bar for my elderly father to use. He became entrapped between the bar and his mattress when trying to get up to use the restroom in the middle of the night on Saturday , May 28, 2022. He was trapped for over 10 before being found. This resulted in severe medical injuries which required an extensive hospital stay. And subsequently care from a long term care facility as he lost all of his mobility and was never able to return home.
