Death Made Oct 15, 2014, sent to the company Dec 2, 2014, published by CPSC Dec 23, 2014
The product, in the report: HandiRail; see attached package insert.
My mother was a resident of [REDACTED] Assisted Living in [REDACTED]. My sister found a HandiRail at a garage sale in 2011. Based on its appearance, she thought it would be helpful to my mother. The facility allowed the device to be used to help my mother when getting out of bed. On November 27, 2013, my mother asphyxiated and died when she became caught between the mattress and the HandiRail.
I am enclosing the HandiRail package insert, police report and photographs as well as a copy of a patent which was apparently granted by the U.S. Patent Office on October 31, 2000.
