The product, in the report: Transactions Drive Medical RTL15063-ADJ Adjustable Height Home Bed Assist Handle Sold by: Amazon.com Services, Inc

My mom was in an assisted care facility, she was 93, she had been using the Drive Medical RTL15063-ADJ Adjustable Height Home Bed Assist Handle Sold by: Amazon.com Services, Inc . On January 24, 2024, we were called by the nursing home and told that she had passed away. When we went there, the medical examiner and police were there, as it was considered a suspicious death, and they did not let us go into the room, because of how she was positioned, pictures were taken, by both the nursing home, and medical examiner. because she had choked to death. We asked how, and they explained she must have rolled over and fell out of bed, and she became entrapped in the bed assist device and choked to death. It went to the medical examiner to determine the cause of death, and it came back as death by asphyxiation

  2. Death

Made Oct 11, 2011, sent to the company Oct 19, 2011, published by CPSC Nov 2, 2011

The product, in the report: The bedrail is shape like an “L” with the bottom part of the “L” sliding under the mattress. It is 12-18 inches high and about 12 inches wide. It is secured to the mattress by a one inch wide strap that goes around the mattress. (The strap is fastened by the kind of fastener used on a backpack or fanny pack strap so it slides a bit when pulled.)

About two years ago, I bought a “Drive” bedrail (model 15064) at Hayward Medical market to assist my elderly mother in getting in and out of bed. The bedrail is shaped like an “L” with the bottom part of the “L” sliding under the mattress. It is secured to the mattress by a one inch strap that goes around the matress. On February 5 of this year, my mother was reaching for the telephone on the bedside table and started to fall out of bed. Instead of keeping her from falling out of the bed, the strap slipped, causing her to fall between the bed and the bedrail. Her neck got caught on the bedrail, strangling her, and she suffocated to death. After her death, I contacted Hayward Medical Market, and they immediately removed that model from their shelves, but a bedrail with that kind of strap should not be sold anywhere.
