The reports, as CPSC published them

Reports people made to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. CPSC publishes each one after sending it to the company named, and doesn’t guarantee they’re accurate. A report isn’t a recall.

Each report is the words of the person who made it, as CPSC published them. The company’s comments, where CPSC published any, are set apart as the company’s own.

  1. No incident, no one hurt

Made Jul 21, 2023, sent to the company Jul 31, 2023, published by CPSC Aug 14, 2023

The product, in the report: I purchased a Steelcase Leap Version 2 in Indigo color from MadisonSeating.com, the web site for Madison Seating LLC. I paid a base price of $339.11, $34 for the hardwood casters and $25 for a lumbar bar on the back for a total of $398.11. (Email receipt enclosed.) https://www.madisonseating.com/shop/leap-chair-v2-in-indigo-fabric-by-steelcase/ I believe the product is fake because it has no required manufacturers tags nor model and serial numbers.

This is a complaint against MADISON SEATING, LLC (DOS ID:3836694), a foreign limited liability company doing business in Kings County, New York, made after I was sold a suspected fake consumer product by them, namely an office chair.

On July 14, 2023, I purchased a Steelcase Leap Version 2 in Indigo color from MadisonSeating.com, the web site for Madison Seating LLC. I paid a base price of $339.11, $34 for the hardwood casters and $25 for a lumbar bar on the back for a total of $398.11. (Email receipt enclosed.) https://www.madisonseating.com/shop/leap-chair-v2-in-indigo-fabric-by-steelcase/ Ground shipping to Brooklyn was included. On July 18, I received the chair from Madison Seating and opened it the next day. The item arrived in a Madison Seating box, not one made my Steelcase. The color was a garish, electric blue, not the soft blue pictured on the website. The fabric was scratchy and not the plush fabric of my previous chair. I called immediately to return the item. An anonymous employee wrote that returns would be at my expense. I contacted Steelcase to ask them about the color and the fabric of a Leap chair in Indigo. The first person told me that “indigo” is not a Leap color. [REDACTED], an order fulfillment consultant, asked me to photograph all labels on the chair. I could not find one label on Madison’s chair. I double checked consumer images and where to find labels that list product numbers and manufacturing location and dates. This chair has no markings, no model and item number, no site of manufacturing. [REDACTED] wrote: “The label of the product, in this case a chair, has to be underneath it.”

I’m a journalist and covered many fires as a young reporter. I know that furniture manufactured by U.S. corporations must bear consumer product information attesting to, for starters, that the product is not composed of flammable material and will not break when someone sits on it. https://www.cpsc.gov/s3fs-public/04.12.2016%20Guide%20to%20US%20Furniture%20Requirements.pdf I have filed a complaint for redress with the New York State Attorney General’s office.

The product, in the report: In previous file.

I cut my hand open on the armrest of a Steelcase Jersey Desk Chair. Item TS38301, made in Mexico on 11/12/2010, serial number 1PDD0475D9. The rubber pads on the armrests wear and split wide open exposing a razor sharp inner support. Anyone grasping the armrest will surely be injured, possibly very seriously. When I contacted the company about this hazard, they merely sent me to a replacement armrest company. No apology for making an unsafe product or offering a safe replacement.
