The reports, as CPSC published them

Reports people made to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. CPSC publishes each one after sending it to the company named, and doesn’t guarantee they’re accurate. A report isn’t a recall.

Each report is the words of the person who made it, as CPSC published them. The company’s comments, where CPSC published any, are set apart as the company’s own.

The product, in the report: Swingason Chair from Pier One Imports, Mocha color and the Pier One imports Swingason stand

My husband was swinging lightly in the Swingason chair from Pier 1 Imports and it topple over twice. Fortunately he was not hurt but the stand fell and broke a pottery planter. I thought it was a fluke event as he is not a large person nor was he doing anything other than swinging in the chair. I heard about the recall and thought I should add our experience.

The product, in the report: Swingasan chair Item # 2434817

The caller is an expert who was called in to investigate the product by the plaintiff.

The caller stated that a male (weight - 205 pounds) was sitting in the chair. The spring on the chair unexpectedly broke. The seat fell to the floor. The consumer received compression fracture to his spine. The caller is not aware of other injuries to the consumer, but they are possible.

The caller discovered that the design for the spring (holds chair to the ceiling) was grossly under designed and could fail at any minute. The caller stated that the spring concentrates stress on a single location. The caller stated that the wire that was formed into the spring may have been cracked due to a very low spring index (which makes forming of the spring difficult and may result in cracking of the spring wire).

The caller stated that the material used to make the spring wire seems to be weak. The caller stated that he has not completed those testing yet. The caller is working on those tests.

The caller stated that the chair had been used about 50 times prior to the incident.

The caller has the broken spring and another spring that is not damaged. The caller does not have the chair. The caller has photographs of the spring.

The caller stated that the retailer is aware of this issue as it is a legal matter.

There are no recalls on this product.
