The product, in the report: IKEA GUNDE folding chair. Product number 602.177.99 Model GUNDE folding chair
The product in question, the GUNDE FOLDING CHAIR from IKEA, is unstable and people fall off it all the time. My report here is not about one incident, but it is about several. Every time my daughter’s school has an event, these chairs are used and people fall off them.
I was at a birthday party in the past 60 days or so, and these chairs were in use. People fell off the chairs 10 times in two hours. This is clearly an unsafe product. The plastic feet on the bottom of the chair are not designed to prevent tipping. Children and elderly people seem to have the most trouble with these chairs.
If you look at the reviews of the product -- https://www.ikea.com/us/en/p/gunde-folding-chair-white-60217799/# -- all the one-star reviews talk about the instability of the product. Review titles like “dangerous!” or “will injure your friends and family” are clear flags that there are no isolated incidents. This product fails all the time.
The CEO’s office states that they have received “only” 55 reports of stability through millions of sales of this chair. That still seems like an awfully high count. My expectation for chair failure is around zero percent.
Further, it should be noted that IKEA refused to publish my review of the product on their website. They stated that “All reviews containing safety issues are flagged for our immediate review and are not posted on our website.” despite the fact that all the one-star reviews clearly discuss safety issues. In short, IKEA is not being honest about their review policy.
