  1. Emergency room

Made Sep 15, 2020, sent to the company Oct 7, 2020, published by CPSC Nov 10, 2020

The product, in the report: Giantex Set of 4 Dining Chairs, Rubber Wood Dining Room Side Chair, Mestler Dining Room Side Chairs for Home Kitchen, Dining Room, Mint Green Model HW65270

I purchased 4 dining room chairs online. They were packaged in sets of 2. When I opened the first box in my house, I immediately noticed a noxious chemical smell. As I started removing the individual parts from the box, I began to feel a little bit dizzy. I left the room to get away from the smell. Within 30 minutes, I began to experience severe vertigo and nausea. I became completely incapacitated with unremitting vomiting. I could not even open my eyes due to the vertigo. An ambulance was called and I was transported to the emergency room. I was given intravenous anti-nausea medication in the ambulance. Upon arrival at the hospital, a chest X-Ray was taken and a CAT scan was performed as my symptoms resembled heart attack or stroke. All tests were completely normal. Intravenous medication was continued for a few hours and I was released from the ER. By the time I got home the chemical smell had dissipated. After about 10 days, I opened the second box of chairs OUTSIDE. The chemical smell was again apparent and I left the box open in the fresh air for a few hours. When I felt safe, I brought the chair parts into my house. I proceeded to do some tasks in another room far away from the chair parts, but still began to feel dizzy and disoriented for a time. The symptoms were not as severe as with the first package opening and eventually went away.
