The product, in the report: Bumbo Multi Seat

I own a family daycare and Thursday June 4th, I had a 9 month old baby in her bumbo multi seat. It is made with 2 seat straps to strap to a chair and a 3 point harness to secure baby in. When I got her out after lunch, I noticed her 3 point harness was unstrapped. I couldn’t believe I forgot to strap her in - I am so careful about that. On Tuesday June 9th, I put her in her seat for breakfast and remembering the other day when she wasn’t strapped in, I MADE SURE she was strapped and the buckles on the 3 point harness were latched tight and secure. After breakfast, I was washing dishes and the baby was in her seat leaning forward and grabbing her water cup off the table, taking a drink, putting her water back on the table etc. I heard a child fall, and turned around and the baby was on the floor. She was checked out and was thankfully ok with no injuries. I was trying to figure out what possibly could have happened because I was positive she was buckled. I was able to unsnap the buckle with a MINIMAL amount of pressure by pressing it onto the plastic piece that came up between the legs. I firmly believe that by her playing with her cup ( and just wiggling around the other day), she was putting just enough pressure on the buckle to unlatch it. I have emailed the company, but have not yet had a response.

The product, in the report: Blue Infant seat

3/24/14- The consumer stated that she had her 6 month old 17 pound son seated on the infant seat for 10 minutes. He was chewing on a piece of the restraint belt for 2 minutes. The consumer hears her son making gasping sounds. She noticed that he was choking on something. The consumer was able to retrieve the item from his throat after 60 seconds. After dislodging the item from his throat, she realizes that he was choking on the plastic thin warning label that was glued to the restraint belt of the seat. The consumer took her son to a pediatrician named [REDACTED]. He determined that the child was not injured and advised the consumer to observe the infant and return in the event of any seizure or abnormal behavior. The consumer discontinued the use of the infant seat.

3/25/14- The consumer contacted the manufacturer. She spoke with [REDACTED]. [REDACTED] offered a replacement. The consumer would have to send pictures of the seat and return the seat first in order to get a replacement. Otherwise, the consumer could “keep the seat and pretend this never happened”.

This product is affected by recall #08-046 and was repaired according to the remedy.

The consumer thinks this product poses a choking and injury hazard to the infants.

The product, in the report: blue bumbo, no tray, no seat belt, warning label on back

2/14/10 - Husband put son in bumbo on kitchen island. Bumbo was placed on an unread newspaper, still folded up. No tray or seat belt on bumbo. Husband turned away to make son’s bottle. Son wiggled out of bumbo and fell to tile floor. Bumbo remained stationary. Son was visibly shaken, startled, red marks above left eye and left cheek. We rushed our son to ER immediately. ER doctors checked him out, observed him for 4+hours (due to concern of head injury), advised us against cat scan due to age, sent us home. Three weeks later we were back at ER because of wheezing/cold (son was diagnosed with RSV at that visit), they happened to take a chest x-ray, which revealed a single mending rib fracture on left rib. We advised them of fall and ER visit 3 weeks earlier. They sent us home to treat RSV and told us nothing to do for rib except let it heal. ER report goes to pediatrician (standard practice with ER visit), pediatrician calls us to take son for another x-ray to confirm what they see. We do, and then pediatrician calls DCFS. DCFS requires us to take our son to the hospital on a Friday night where we stayed for the next 5 days being threatened by DCFS that they would take our son away if we refused all the tests. He had full skeletal survey + an unnecessary MRI because his head was larger than average, and various blood panels. In all adverse reactions during MRI, 50% are in kids under 1 years of age. No choice but to follow their orders or risk our son being taken away. All tests came back fine except the SINGLE rib fracture on the LEFT side of his body. I thought we were good to check out. They advised mend time was approx to date of fall, no additional injuries, They advised they still thought it concerning for abuse. They had no process in place for a 2nd opinion. Required us to have 24/7 parent supervision in our home while they did an investigation. Despite investigation coming back no concern with parents or daycare providers they said the injury was not consistent with the fall and indicated an ****unknown perpetrator**** abused our child. Son is now on the state register for abused children because of this. We hired the DIRECTOR of the bio-mechanical engineering lab in Chicago, a phd with 30 years experience. These people are injury recreation experts. The only people who can really offer an opinion based on the reason DCFS gave for indicating abuse. The report came back indicating that rib fracture likely resulted in our son arching back and flipping over the side of the bumbo and the fall to the tile floor worsened the fracture. In summary, it was 100% plausible it happened exactly the way we described. We presented the report to DCFS in the appeal process and despite ALL the evidence they would not dismiss. Over $17k in expenses related to trying to prove that the bumbo is what abused our son, not some unknown perpetrator. The case is now with the Supreme Circuit Court. How does a bumbo accident with EVIDENCE to support what happened turn into this nightmare. And I didn’t even include the entirety of the impact this had on our lives/family! The bumbo makers, the doctors, DCFS and yes, my dumb husband are to blame. BEWARE PEOPLE. Thankfully, my son was not as badly hurt as some other cases I am reading about. My heart goes out to those people. Hopefully, they didn’t have to deal with DCFS also!

Placed my son in Bumbo infant seat. After about five minutes, I noticed that his feet and legs were a becoming bluish due to loss of circulation. He is five months old, is in the fiftieth percentile for both weight and height. Removed my son from Bumbo and rubbed legs, circulation and color returned to normal. I am concerned this might happen to other babies without parents knowing if babies wear pants and socks.

The product, in the report: Bumbo baby seat like: http://bumbo.com/products/

Bumbo baby seat with child seat belt had a safety label warning affixed to one end of nylon buckle. Child sitting in seat removed warning label from seat belt as whole and started to play with it in his mouth. Warning label material is a rubber like material and prior to child sitting in seat no signs were present the label was coming off or in danger of coming off. Child removed label very quickly and had it mostly intact in part of his mouth before being discovered. The child was not hurt, but label is definitely a choking hazard.

I had my 8 month old infant in middle of kitchen counter supervised. I turned to put something in the sink and heard a thud. My baby fell off the countertop and bruised up her forehead.. She vomited for hours afterwards and was watched in the ER for 8 hours. Luckily she recovered without further symptoms and came home after that. I had no idea this product had been recalled. I used it with my older daughter without incident.

I had my daughter in her Bumbo with the new straps I received in the mail. I was close other and I heard her choking. I turned to her and she was choking on the warning tag on the strap. It shredded apart and was stuck in her throat. I got it out of her mouth but it scared us both. I have pictures that I took of the tag.

The product, in the report: Bumbo seat (purple)

I am unsure when my bumbo seat was manufactured but I know it was before 2009. My seven month old daughter has fallen forward out of this seat as I do not have the seat belt attachment for it yet. I didn’t even know it was under recall until today when I seen it on the news. My daughter only had minor bruising and was ok.

However, I think that people should be aware that the child (as my son and my daughter has both)been able to move the chair. I do not have carpeting; just hardwood floors and tile. Both children were able to use their feet to scoot backwards posing a risk to their safety if stairs, cords, etc are near by. I would hate to see that a child died or was seriously hurt by being able to scoot the chair around and nothing was ever said. I think that a warning should be noted about use on smooth surfaces.

The product, in the report: Lime Green Bumbo Baby Seat

While I have determined that the lime green colored Bumbo purchased at Walmart store #2593, after thoroughly reading the recall notice I have one concern. My concern is with Walmart reselling a defective Bumbo without the agreed safety restraints installed. (Which is the one purchased for my infant son roughly 6-7 months ago).

I discovered this initially when reading the recall notice which noted the specified information. While looking for this number I was at first worried because the number on the bottom of Bumbo wasn’t the one in recall notice. knowing 100% fully we purchased Bumbo very recently I took a closer look.

Upon doing I found a raised number Polyurethane World Patent No. PCT: ZA/1999/00030 (which appears to be erased). Which brings me back to my concern. My concern is not only that the Bumbo we purchased poses a hazard, but Walmart re-sold such a twice recalled product, putting it back on to the their shelves without the proper restraints. Not to mention for a profit. I’m disgusted by Walmart’s Audacity to do something like this. Who knows how many more situations such as ours there are?

Walmarts #2593 manager ([REDACTED]) was no help whatsoever, and I didn’t know who to contact. So thank you for your time in reading and hopefully addressing this issue.

Had I known this product was unsafe and caused skull fractures to infants, I never would have used it and my daughter and I would not have had to go through this!!! I am taking my daughter to her pediatrician tomorrow for a follow-up.

The product, in the report: The Seat is round and flat with a diameter of about 15 inches. It is constructed of a single piece of molded foam and comes in various colors. The seat has leg holes and the seat back wraps completely around the child. On the front of the seat in raised lettering is the word “Bumbo” with the image of an elephant on top. The bottom of the seat has the following words: “Manufactured by Bumbo South Africa Material: Polyurethane World Patent No. PCT: ZA/1999/00030.”

My babysitter put my daughter in our Bumbo on our countertop. She rolled right over the sides/top and fell onto our tile floor. She broke her tibia and fibia.

The product, in the report: Bumbo baby seat

On Sunday, March 21st, 2010, our 7-month-old daughter was sitting in the Bumbo baby seat on our kitchen island in front of her father. Our daughter then turned and reached behind her for a banana that was on the counter, and she fell out of the seat and landed on the kitchen floor before my husband could catch her. We took her to the emergency room, where she underwent a CAT scan and was diagnosed with a nondisplaced skull fracture. She was then transferred to a larger hospital in a nearby city for overnight observation to make sure no complications ensued. Although we did go against the manufacturer’s warning about putting the Bumbo on an elevated surface, it is clear that this product is not safe for babies to sit in without some kind of restraining device. When we saw that the Bumbo had recently been recalled, we decided to come forward and share our experience with the Consumer Product Safety Commission.

The product, in the report: Bumbo Chair, blue in color.

At approximately 5:00PM on 5/15/12, my son was in his bumbo chair on the island counter as my husband was unloading the dishwasher and he bounced himself right off the counter. He had a 5’ drop onto a linoleum floor. He was rushed to the emergency room as he fell on directly on his head. He was still lodged in the bumbo chair, head down, with his bottom and the chair up in the air. He cried hysterically on and off for several hours and fell asleep a few times in between. At the emergency room, he was given a CT scan and it was determined he did not have a skull fracture but the impact of the fall was so hard that the ear wax that had been inside of his ears was outside and located on his cheek.

I do not feel this product is safe to put infants in. I would not recommend it to anyone nor would I ever put any of my children in it ever again. Yes, he should not have been on the counter but I do not feel this is stressed enough as a hazard and I do not feel that putting a strap on the product will make it safer in any way. It will not prevent babies from falling over and hitting their heads.

Re: bumbo chair recall. I have used the jumbo chair with all three of my children, and they have all fallen out of the chair at floor level, between the age of 6 and 9 months. None of them had visible injuries, but were all upset. Once the infant fell and was able to wiggle out of the seat, I stopped using it with that child to prevent any further falls. Two of these falls happened in the spring of 2010 and the third spring 2012.

In 2009 my family and i took my 7 month old to the park along with several other children to feed the animals. My son was sitting in his bumbo chair on the bench table in the very middle; to avoid being attacked by geese that were everywhere 3 of my brothers and their wives were around him within inches of him. In the blink of an eye he moved wrong and flipped the seat hitting his head on the bench seat and landing on the concrete. He was immediately rushed to the ER with a lump on his head the size of a softball and a concussion. It was determined he had a small fracture and he was transferred to UCDavis medical center for a two day observation. I would never recommend this chair to anyone they shouldn’t even manufacture them anymore with the amount of injuries reported. Horrible product, i still cringe when i see them

My 7 month old son was in a bumbo seat on top of my kitchen counter. It did not have a tray on at the time. I turned my back on him for a second and when I turned around I saw he’d arched his back, and he fell out of the seat onto the tile floor (he fell about 4 ft down). He was upset but unhurt (he stopped crying when I nursed him). I checked his body over for any damage several times very thoroughly (I’m an RN) but he didn’t have a single blemish on his body. He was very lucky not to be hurt and I never took my eyes off him in the Bumbo after that. He arched his back and popped out of it many times after that but I was always there so he never fell again.

Hello, I just wanted to send a message in to complain about 2 baby products that resulted in our baby falling each time, the second being a skull fracture incident.

[REDACTED] 2. Bumbo - our 7mo old fell from counter top when arching back. I know company warns against using on raised surfaces, but the product gave us a huge false sense of security as the product tipped over with our baby off the counter while baby was still in Bumbo. Baby ended up in ER with a fracture to the skull.

Please help stop injuries with these products!!!

My husband had our 5.5 month old son in his Bumbo. He was seated on a level counter away from the edge. My husband looked away briefly to start bath water and my son and the Bumbo crashed off the three foot counter. My son had to go to the emergency for a bleeding mouth and nose. Fortunately he only suffered a fat lip and a torn frenulum. While the directions do say to only use the Bumbo on the floor I believe this warning is not strong enough. We have used it many times in similar situations with multiple children and had no problem. Perhaps there should be additional non skid material on the bottom to make it less likely to move across a surface.

The person filing the report was the physician on staff that cared for the infant when she was bought into the delivery room. The seven month young victim was placed in the seat on a elevated surface when she arched her back causing the chair and her to flip backward. The victim weighs 17 pounds and is approximately 20 inches long. The victim fell out of the seat and hitting her head on the floor (type of flooring is unknown). The victim’s mother drove her to Little River health Care in Rockdale Texas. The victim was given cat scans and diagnosed with having a right temporal bone fracture. The victim had minor bleeding from the ear as a result from her injuries. The victim was then transferred and transported by ambulance to Children’s Medical Center in Temple Texas. No further information was provided on the victim since she was transferred to another facility.

I sat the Bumbo on my living room floor that is carpeted and put my baby inside it. He was watching TV and playing about. My son tried reaching for a toy that was beside him and all the sudden, the Bumbo tipped over sideways with my baby inside of it. I was in the same room with him at the time so I rushed right over there to get him out of the Bumbo and check for injuries. Thank God there was no serious injuries. My son was crying and scared. Now that this has happened, I have stopped using the Bumbo. At the time of this happening because there was no serious injuries, I never filed a report. I just stopped using it. About a month after this, my mother told me the Bumbo had been recalled. I looked further into this and found out that the recall was way back in 2007. Well this is 2011 and the product is still failing to keep our babies safe. This product is very unsafe and I don’t think it should be selling on our store shelves.

The product, in the report: Bumbo Baby Sitter - plastic pre-formed child seat to help aid infants in sitting upright

I purchased the Bumbo Sitter around October 2010 when my daughter was born. I didn’t use the Bumbo until she was only enough to hold her head up by herself - basically it was used 5 to 10 minutes a day 3 to 4 days per week from age 3 to 4 months (approximately January 2011- February 2011). The Bumbo would be placed on the floor in the middle of room. I would give her a toy and if she would drop it, she would look at it, but as she got a little older she would try to reach for it, reaching out to the side and sometimes trying to reach forward or behind her. I would usually hand it to her. I caught her almost tipping over backwards once, so after that I always made sure I was no more than 2 to 3 feet away at all times. But one time she couldn’t reach her toy, and I was momentarily distracted by another child, even though I was sitting on the floor only 2 feet away from her, and the Bumbo fell over sideways, causing her to hit her head. Somehow or another she hit forehead first, causing a huge egg-sized hematoma in the middle of her forehead. This occurred approximately in February 2011. I am a medical professional and didn’t see need at the time to rush her to the ER, there were no visual signs of concussion or loss of consciousness, but to this day December 14, 2011, she still has a bluish/purple discoloration to her forehead, approximately 1 inch in diameter and located 1/4 inch above the bridge of her nose. It is most noticeable on cold days or if she has been crying or when her face turns flushed/red for any reason.

I just noticed the recall on the bumbo chair while on my sisters facebook page. I wanted to write in with my own incident. Not only is the bumbo chair a hazard while on a table or counter top (which I never did), but my daughter fell out of one and received an injury while the bumbo was on the floor! She is 2 yrs old now, but when she was a baby and using the bumbo, I sat her in it on the bathroom floor while I was looking in the mirror and putting on makeup. She was able to arch her back and someone lean forward enough that she fell out and onto the ceramic tile floor of the bathroom, forehead/face first. She received a large bump and bruise on her forehead. I can send pictures if needed. I would recommend that the bumbo be used ONLY with the tray on it to possibly prevent a baby from being able to push forward and fall out.
