How badly anyone was hurt

  • No one hurt 3 CPSC: Incident, No Injury

As each report says it, in short words; CPSC’s own words are under each.

The reports, as CPSC published them

Reports people made to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. CPSC publishes each one after sending it to the company named, and doesn’t guarantee they’re accurate. A report isn’t a recall.

Each report is the words of the person who made it, as CPSC published them. The company’s comments, where CPSC published any, are set apart as the company’s own.

  1. No one hurt

Made Oct 16, 2014, sent to the company Nov 26, 2014, published by CPSC Dec 11, 2014

The product, in the report: Floor Lamp

Caller stated that the magnifying glass on the lamp started a fire which his housekeeper contained. The sun coming through the window penetrated the magnifying glass on the lamp which caused the incident.

(10/2014) He filed a report with the manufacturer but he does not feel that they took the matter seriously. Due to the fact that the lamp could have caused a house fire, he feels that the product should be reported to the agency as being a fire hazard.

    The product, in the report: Verilux Rise & Shine Natural Wake-Up Light SKU: VA05WW1 Price: $99.95 Dimensions: 12” x 9” x 6” Weight: 2.4 lbs http://www.verilux.com/light-therapy-lamps/rise-shine-wake-up-light

While out of the house, the Verilux Rise & Shine Natural Wake up Light fell off of the night stand and onto the bed sheet. Upon returning, we had smelled like something was burning and when checking the bedroom, we noticed that this alarm clock, once falling onto the bed turned itself on and never shut off. The light bulb inside melted to the plastic and then to the sheet almost causing a fire. This light is not easy to turn off, to turn it off you actually have to press down on the off button or keep pressing down on the lamp itself until it turns off. Noone was home to do this, and so the light stayed on until it completely burned itself, the plastic, and the sheet out. I do have the product still with me and can send pictures or the product itself. When trying to return the item, the store in which I bought the item would not take it back because they do not keep records of the warranty unless you keep the receipt, even corporate. I contacted Verilux and I am still awaiting a response, but this product is extremely popular and I fear that it may cause a house fire which could lead to serious injury or death.

The product, in the report: Verilux floor lamp

I have a Verilux floor lamp that uses the 27 watt flouresent bulb that has four “fingers”, for want of a better description. I have owned this lamp for several years. This bulb is apparently quite delicate. I have had three of them shatter, raining glass on me. There is no lens or guard in front of this bulb, and there never has been. Nor is there a place for one, so it is not just missing. I have been in contact with the company several times and they seem quite unconcerned about this problem. They have sent me free bulbs but this does not fix the real problem which is safety.
