My girlfriend ordered two table lamps from Target.com. The product is described as a “Nate Berkus Classic Task Lamp” and more information can be found on their website at: http://www.target.com/p/nate-berkus-classic-task-lamp-white-includes-cfl-bulb/-/A-14558504. It was manufactured in China and includes a [REDACTED] helical 13W compact fluorescent bulb. Upon plugging in the first lamp (we never unpacked the second), it caused a slight shock and blew the fuse in our apartment. This required an electrician to replace the fuse and – had our apartment had less up-to-date wiring - would have posed a significant fire risk. I reported this issue to Target.com customer support, but their “incident” department was only available during Central Time business hours (the number they provided was 800-440-0480). I asked that they pass the note along and offered to provide my contact details for them to follow-up on the safety issue, but they refused to and said that the only way I could properly file a safety report was to call back during business hours.
I’m troubled that Target, as a matter of policy, has decided to pass the buck onto customers informing them (in a polite, courteous manner!) about a serious safety issue and as such wanted to report it here as well. I’ll try Target back, but am not optimistic about reaching the right individuals within their support and safety organizations.
