The product, in the report: Adjustable Pharmacy Floor Lamp - Dark Bronze Item #: LS-960 Model: Pharma Adjust Pharmacy Floor Dark Bronze SKU: 78457 Ref #: KZ1228101218171179009
My wife and I purchased our lamp online from Lamps Plus on 12/28/2010. I assembled it as instructed, and it had been in our bedroom since that time. It had not been dropped, placed in water, or misused in any way. On 07/23/2015, I attempted to pick the lamp up by the pole, and the base fell away from the lamp; whatever material the base is composed of had disintegrated.
I have contacted both the seller (Lamps Plus) and the manufacturer (Lite Source Inc), both of whom dismiss this as a problem of age. We have had two other floor lamps of similar construction, and it was the wiring, not the base, that gave out over time.
The response from a customer service supervisor at Lamps Plus was “the base are [sic] made up of concrete filled with air pockets. This is to give the floor lamp its weight. Overtime [sic] when the lamp is moved, those air pockets cause it to crack and eventually crumble.” As the manufacturer cautions “bulb gets HOT quickly!”, I am concerned that should the base “crumble” while unattended, the lamp would fall - in our case on bedding or against curtains - and thus, this lamp constitutes a real fire hazard.
