The product, in the report: Library Floor Task Lamp sold by Restoration Hardware
Three times in the past three weeks (June 10 -26, 2024) my wife and I have been electrically shocked when touching a “Library Floor Task Lamp” bought from Restoration Hardware in the late-2008-2009 timeframe. Initially, when my wife reported two shocks, I thought it a short in the outlet and took that apart, finding no problems. So I looked at the lamp more closely, getting my own shock in the process. Upon removing the weighted base, I discovered that the rubberized insulation on the interior lamp cord had deteriorated to the point of directly exposing the metal lamp shaft to the copper wiring in literally dozens of locations. (I am attaching relevant photos.) I contacted Restoration Hardware (RH) customer service by phone, expressing my concern for the safety of its customers, asked whether it didn’t have an obligation to look further into this product’s safety and perhaps issue a recall, and inquired about its warranty and restitution. I emphasized that my primary concern was not replacement/restitution but customer safety. I was advised to provide a fuller description, receipts and photos by email, which I did to the best of my abilities on June 27, 2024. On June 29, 2024, RH customer service responded with an email stating that without specific information on the date and location of the original purchase, they are “unable to return or exchange the lamp.” There was not one word of RH’s concern for the priority issue of customer safety. For that reason, I am contacting you in the belief that a serious injury or even electrocution as the consequence of further public exposure to this unsafe product is in the purview and responsibility of the CPSC.
