  1. Hurt, care not known

Made Sep 14, 2011, sent to the company Oct 12, 2011, published by CPSC Oct 26, 2011

The product, in the report: 3 bulb 58 inch high Crinkle paper sqaure floor lamp

The consumer stated that her 3 bulb, crinkle paper square floor lamp was smoldering in her home. The lamp is 58 inches high. The consumer stated that the product is intended to be stepped on at the switch in order to be operated. The consumer ordinarily has the product plugged in to a wall outlet that she must flip a switch to send power to that outlet. The consumer stated that she just once she stepped on the switch and the unit caught fire. The consumer stated that the product was on for about 20-30 minutes before it caught fire. The extent of the damage to the product is the foot switch has melted and shorted out. The damage was mostly contained the foot switch.

The consumer first noticed an electrical smell before she noticed it was her lamp. The consumer stated that damage to her home has been minor of where there was smoldering by the foot switch. The consumer would compare the diameter of the burns to her carpet to that of a cigarette burn. The consumer put out the fire by applying a wet towel on her carpet after powering off the lamp. The consumer never saw flames but saw sparks coming from the underside of the foot switch.

The consumer did experience electric shock to her right hand when she picked the foot switch. The consumer did not experience any burns. The consumer opted not to call the fire department at the time of the incident. The consumer called the online retailer 2 weeks ago and was not given any information about the firm, therefore has not been able to call them. The consumer was referred by an attorney to call the CPSC.

*Additional info - consumer wants to make it clear that the lamp itself was not the cause of this incident. The electric footswitch/electrical cord that is used in the manufacturing of this particular lamp model is specifically to blame for the incident. This same style of footswitch used to turn the lamp on/off can be found on hundreds of different lamp models. consumer believes that it is the manufacturer of this electric footswitch that needs to be notified.
