The product, in the report: Manufacturer: WBM International Model: 1500B Product Name: Himalayan Pink Salt Lamp Serial Number: 185810127 UPC 5856000237

I am writing to the CPSC to help me resolve a situation with a faulty product sold by Home Depot that may have ended in tremendous property damage and loss of my life. I purchased a Himalayan Lamp below at the Home Depot Coney island store in Brooklyn Ny Manufacturer: WBM International Model: 1500B- Product Name: Himalayan Glow Pink Salt Lamp Serial Number: 185810127.

The lamp was on a table in my living room plugged in but not on. I was leaving my apartment and came back in to get something I had forgotten. I smelled burning plastic and saw that the switch on the lamp had shorted and had just gone on fire. Further investigation led me to discover that Salt Lamps produce large amounts of water when switch is not turned on when outside humidity is high ( my window was open ). My lamp was plugged in and the water streamed down where the lamp switch was. It short circuited, started burning and went on fire. There was water on the surrounding floor below the lamp. The apt would have gone up in flames and if this was at night when I was sleeping in the back room, there would have been no escape as I am on the 10th floor. I explained this in detail several times to [REDACTED], resolution expeditor at Home Depot whom my email had been forwarded to after I emailed the CEO. She inquired with intertek (ETL) the certifier of the lamp but they have stated there is no inherent danger. The certifier wasnt going to admit there was something wrong because they do not want any liability so they reaffirmed its safety. They have a clear conflict of interest. Home depot should not blindly accept a certifier’s reaffirmed safety rating when they are liable. The lamp must be labeled to be unplugged when not in use. A question remains -will the heat of the bulb when plugged in fully evaporate the moisture that comes out if its really humid? At a minimum it must be labeled appropriately. [REDACTED] was satisfied with the assessment giving no extra thought. Was she not even thinking that Intertek denial was due to conflict of interest? She was just following company protocol and not putting any intelligent thought into decision making. There is a time when circumstances demand greater attention than what protocol calls for. When I explained that the media should know so that innocent people are educated about the dangers she was unconcerned and in the last email told me good luck in my endeavors. Completely unacceptable. This should be a wake up call to home depot to prevent a catastrophe. Possibly home or life loss? I hope that we can prevent future loss for someone else. I also contacted WBM who ignored my emails until they saw Home Depot was involved. They offered a a settlement of $500 which I turned down. They rescinded the offer next day when Home Depot seemed like they werent going to proceed with any further investigation. [REDACTED] a lead executive at WBM lied when I called back and very unscrupulous.
