The product, in the report: The Clapper

This product is called “The Clapper” and is advertised on television and sold in many retail stores including “As Seen on TV”.

The Clapper plugs into an electrical outlet. A light or other small home appliance is plugged into The Clapper. The user can turn the light (or other appliance) on/off by clapping their hands.

We were using The Clapper with a small table lamp (75W incandescent bulb).

The Clapper was purchased new at a retail store. It was given as a gift to my 11 year-old son for use in his bedroom. On the first use out of the box, The Clapper was plugged in as described above.

The next morning we went into my son’s room and there was a very apparent electrical smell. We located the source as The Clapper which was still plugged into the outlet. The Clapper actually melted and appears to have burned the outside housing containing the electrical parts.

The Clapper is a fire hazard. We feel that we are very lucky that the damage was not more significant. My son is scared to sleep in his room.
