The product, in the report: Power Bright VC3000W Voltage Transformer 3000 Watt Step Up/Down converter 110/120 Volt - 220/240 Volt. Issue applies to all sizes and models in this range it seems.
In September 2014 I purchased around 70 Step/Down transformers via Amazon. There were all branded Power Bright and ranged from 100W to 3000w. As a matter of course, we decided to check these to ensure they were safe. I had an electrical engineer check them over. He made the following comments:
“At all times, both the 240v and 110v outlet sockets are live. The power switch and fuse have been placed on the neutral line. Blue indicates neutral; the brown (phase) line should be running to the fuse holder, and from there to the power switch. This means that even if the power switch is turned off or the fuse blows, the full input voltage (240v in this case)) is present on both output sockets (even the 110v socket), and on any equipment plugged into them. Even given that earth is set up correctly for an autotransformer, this is fairly dangerous.”
Hi primary concern was that the fuse was not on the phase line in and therefore, the unit still remained live - even when the fuse was blown etc. There is nothing to ensure the feed of live electricity is cut in the event of a fault.
As I mentioned above, these are branded Power Bright but I understand are made by a company called Gold Source for Power Bright. They are sold via Amazon under both brand names. See the following links
