The product, in the report: electrical current tap

The housing of the “current tap” I’ve used for a few years separated when I attempted to remove a power cord I’d plugged into it. This exposed all of the metal electrical conductors inside. The “current tap” remained fully connected to the outlet. The circuit breaker did not trip because nothing shorted. If I’d not noticed what happened and had touched the exposed live electrical components, I’d have been electrocuted. This happened with no forewarning. I purchased this specifically to be used with an outlet above my kitchen counter for the purpose of keeping a cord connected there from sticking straight out from the wall. I wanted the cord to hug the wall.

The product, in the report: The adaptor is a LITESUN Model LT-8A. Additional identification embossed on the plastic adaptor body states E241182 Made In China. There is also an attached sticker that says UL Listed Current Tap No. AM653714 L115040H3 copyright 2013 UL LLC.

Several years ago I purchased a three outlet plug-in electrical adaptor from Home Depot. This device is also known as a “current tap”. After using it for years, with various power tools, the male ground prong came out of the adaptor while I was unplugging it. Later, while looking into the empty hole left by the missing ground prong, I noticed that there was no metal in there, only plastic. In other words, the adaptor as manufactured, never had any connection/continuity between the male ground prong and the three female outlet grounds. I also probe tested this device with a multi-meter and thereby confirmed the absence of any grounding paths through the adaptor. If any of my power tools had developed a ground fault while plugged into this adaptor, there would have been no protection against the resultant shock hazard. No doubt, there are more of these defective adaptors out there. And no doubt the people using them, like me in years past, have no clue about the hidden danger.
