The product, in the report: Smart meter

We purchased our house new in 1984 and until 2009 had no problems with electricity. On March 30 2009 the lights in our home started to dim and then go very bright. I went downstairs to the electric box and turned the power off. I noted that a surge protector had burnt.and there was a black line in the carpet. An electrician friend was called. At the time we were not aware that our Analog meter had recently been replaced to a Smart Meter. by Toronto Hydro.( We did not discover this until 2013 when the city requested access to the house to install a Smart Water Meter). At the time our electrician could not determine the cause. He felt there was an issue with “grounding” outside. There were multiple GFIs blown in the panel. The panel required reconstruction. The surges had damaged the laundry machine/ the electronic ignition on our gas stove and a flat screen TV. The bill was about $3,600. We decided to not involve our house insurer. Perhaps this was an error as they may have investigated more thoroughly. Although we can’t prove anything it seems coincidental that this issue so closely followed the installation of a new meter. We are not aware if the current meter is the same one installed at that time or if it has been changed since. The current meter is a Elster type RIS. I am reporting this because I have read about other instances involving fires with smart meters. We did not have a fire but I wonder about how many others have had non reported experiences like us.
