First aid Made Feb 8, 2017, sent to the company Feb 21, 2017, published by CPSC Mar 7, 2017
The product, in the report: Belkin F6H550-USB Uniterrupted Power Supply (UPS)
I have been using the Belkin F6H550-USB Uninterrupted Power Supply (UPS) for many years to protect my electronic equipment. After a recent power glitch I noticed that the UPS did not switch to battery backup as it is supposed to have done and has done so in the past. Today I disconnected the UPS and the attached equipment in order to examine the unit. However, when I tilted the unit a brown liquid leaked out of the UPS case onto my hands and leg. The liquid was caustic with a mild burning sensation. l quickly washed off the affected skin. Luckily no damage other than irritration was done.
I consider this incident to be a consumer safety concern. The UPS should not leak when tilted while the unit is being moved. It could have caused serious injury. Battery acid can be dangerous causing burns and permanent scarring.

The incident is that my Belkin UPS had failed in a closed state and melted to my carpet. I believe I was lucky that it didn’t cause a fire but wanted to alert Belkin of the issue. I have not received a response from them about this in 6 weeks and was concerned that this issue could be more wide spread than just me considering I was using the product per manufactures specifications.
I was using it to provide protection and minimal runtime to my Home entertainment center. It was positioned behind the TV in a reasonably well ventilated area.
It did cause damage to the carpet but did not burn up any of my electronics.

The product, in the report: Grey in color battery back up unit manufactured by Belkin. Model # BU3DC001-12V
I was at my desk on the computer when I heard a loud pop. Got up to find the source of the sound and did not locate it until I glanced at the battery backup system for the [REDACTED] TV that was installed in the home on December 20th, 2011.
