The product, in the report: BGE smart meter (and related cabling)

At approximately 7:00am, I experienced a catastrophic electrical failure at my home. I already had a “smart meter” (BGE; electric) in use at my house when I purchased it in April, 2013. As far as I know (and partisan investigators agreed), the electrical trunk line that attached to BGE’s side of my smart meter was original, from the 1963 construction of the home. I was indisposed in the upstairs bathroom at the time. What I experienced was a radical cycling of power on & off over a period of perhaps a minute to a minute-and-a-half. During this time, I heard what sounded like a gun-fight going on downstairs. By the time I was able to get to the scene below, the inside utility room which houses my fuse panel, laundry, HVAC components & gas connection, the room was full of smoke that smelled heavily of electrical burning, but there was no fire evident (and no damage evident inside). Outside that room, on the exterior of the house, there was no notable conflagration continuing beyond the seat cushion of a chair that was near the smart meter and a spot of flame atop the Verizon FiOS terminal that was directly below the meter. I extinguished those flames myself in short order. The fire department was on scene within minutes, shortly followed by a BGE rep/technician who removed the smart meter and took it away immediately.
