  1. No one hurt

Made Jun 9, 2025, sent to the company Jun 12, 2025, published by CPSC Jun 27, 2025

The product, in the report: The product is an APC Back-UPS Pro 1000VA Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS), model number BR1000MS, manufactured by Schneider Electric (APC by Schneider Electric). It is designed to provide battery backup and surge protection for home office electronics, computers, networking equipment, and other sensitive devices. Color: Black Form Factor: Tower Dimensions: Approximately 10.2 inches (height) x 3.9 inches (width) x 14.5 inches (depth) Weight: About 22.5 lbs Power Capacity: 1000VA / 600 Watts Outlets: 10 total (6 battery backup + surge protection, 4 surge protection only) USB Ports: 2 (Type A and Type C) for charging devices Display: LCD screen for status and diagnostics Battery Type: User-replaceable lead-acid battery Waveform: Sine wave output on battery Cord Length: 6 feet Other Features: Automatic Voltage Regulation (AVR), hot-swappable battery, network and coaxial data line protection, audible alarms, transformer-block spaced outlets, and a three-year limited warranty. Both units in question were manufactured on December 29, 2020, as confirmed by the attached quality assurance slip and APC support. The serial numbers are 4B2052P40811 (unit with persistent error codes) and 4B2052P48282 (unit that experienced an internal electrical fire). The products purpose is to maintain power to connected electronics during outages and protect them from surges and voltage fluctuations. I have attached a photo of the quality assurance slip from one unit for reference.

What happened that made you want to report? I experienced two separate failures with APC BR1000MS uninterruptible power supply (UPS) units from the same manufacturing batch (serial numbers 4B2052P40811 and 4B2052P48282). One unit developed persistent F02 and F04 error codes and became nonfunctional. The other unit experienced an internal electrical fire, producing a strong electrical/burning smell that lingered in my home for hours. These incidents occurred within a few months of each other, raising concerns about a potential manufacturing defect or safety issue.

What type of product(s) were being used? Both products are APC BR1000MS Back-UPS Pro 1000VA uninterruptible power supply units.

Who was using the product(s)? The products were used by myself, an adult homeowner, in a home office environment.

How were the product(s) being used? The UPS units were used as intended: providing backup power and surge protection for home office electronics (computers, networking equipment, etc.). The maximum load connected to either unit was approximately 500W, well below the rated capacity. The units were operated in a climate-controlled environment (6873F), and batteries were tested and confirmed to be in good condition.

Were there any injuries that happened or may have happened while using the product? No physical injuries occurred. However, the unit that caught fire could have caused burns or started a larger fire if not contained within the devices enclosure.

How did any injuries occur? No injuries occurred, but there was significant risk due to the internal fire and release of smoke and fumes.

    Additional details:

Both units were purchased new and put into service around March 2021.

The serial numbers are very close, suggesting the same production batch.

I contacted APC support ([REDACTED]). They were thorough but ultimately recommended disposal or third-party repair and encouraged me to report this incident to the CPSC.

I have photos and documentation available upon request.

Why I am reporting: Given that both units failed within a short time and one experienced an internal fire, I am concerned about the safety and reliability of this product batch. I believe this could pose a risk to others and warrants investigation. Product Identification:

    Model: APC BR1000MS

    Serial Numbers: 4B2052P40811 (error/F02/F04), 4B2052P48282 (internal fire)

Manufacturing Date: December 29, 2020 (confirmed by attached quality assurance slip and APC support)

I have attached a photo of the quality assurance slip from one unit showing the manufacturing date and serial number. The other unit was manufactured in the same batch; the label was removed after the fire but this was confirmed by APC support.

Both units were purchased new and put into service in March 2021.

The product, in the report: Uninterruptible power supply, made to provide backup power to electronics during an outage by using internal batteries. Black box, approx 25 pounds.

I have a APC BR1500MS UPS, purchased on 9/28/2020. After a 2-3 minute power outage, when the power came back, I heard the UPS making a constant beep. When I entered the room it was in, there was a very strong burning odor and smoke was coming from the top of the unit.

I was able to quickly shut it off, but it kept smoking until I was able to access the battery and disconnect it. If I had not been home and heard it beep, I’m worried it could have escalated to a full-blown fire.

It is rated to supply backup power for up to 900 watts, and I was using less than 100, so it was nowhere close to being overloaded.

The product, in the report: Manufacturer APC Model Number: BN650M1 Purchased December 2019 from Office Depot

My APC uninterrupted power supply caught fire. I had my computer and monitor plugged into it when all of the electronics shut off, and black smoke started pouring out of the unit. It started beeping and the case started melting. I immediately threw it out of the home onto the lawn. I slightly burned my hand but prevented a house fire

  4. Emergency room

Made Jan 13, 2013, sent to the company Feb 1, 2013, published by CPSC Feb 15, 2013

The product, in the report: Product is a white APC brand ’ SUI 1400NET ’ uninterruptible power supply that has been reconditioned / refurbished by excessUPS.com. They do this by replacing the lead acid batteries with their own brand.

I purchased a refurbished uninterruptible power supply originally manufactured by APC from excessUPS.com through Amazon marketplace. excessUPS.com replace the batteries in these devices with their own generic brand when the original batteries expire. The product was powered on November 16th in a well ventilated office with three windows.

I developed the following symptoms after powering the unit

extreme difficulty breathing, dizziness, giddiness, nausea, confusion and disorientation, loss of balance to the point that I fell. I had chest palpitations and vision changes and felt so faint I could not stand in the ER.

In all I was in the emergency room on six occasions from November 19th through November 27th. They performed various tests including CAT and MRI scans of my head, neck and chest.

After a few hours I would appear to somewhat recover at the hospital then after returning to my apartment I would become ill again. Eventually it was discovered that this product was emitting odorless fumes that were the cause of my condition. This gas was exceptionally potent. Briefly smelling the air around the unit almost knocked me out and I was delirious for two hours afterwards. It was able to poison me from an adjacent room with the door closed. Even cleaning the floor where the device was placed made me ill a week after it had been removed.

I am writing this report January 13th and have still not recovered completely from this exposure although I have gradually been improving. The UPS is in storage and I am searching for a lab to have it tested in the hopes of finding out exactly what I have been exposed to.

I have not worked during this time and have substantial medical bills as a consequence. Since this incident it has been a daily struggle just to live. My health has taken a substantial hit. I was so ill at the hospital I had a will written during this time.

The product, in the report: Uninterruptible power supply (UPS) for supplying power to small home/office electronics such as computers and accessories during short power outages. (not a generator) Black in color, 14x7x4 inches.
