This product is a charger for an Apple Macbook. I used the charger under normal circumstances, with no additional equipment between the device and the wall outlet, or between the device and the computer. The charger heats up tremendously while it’s connected to the computer, to the point that it is nearly impossible to touch. When the device is not charging the computer, it returns to a steady state. However, the extreme heat has caused the outer casing of the device to warp and pit, and looks as if it could completely fail, resulting in injury. I reported this problem to Amazon but, apart from receiving a photo of the item from me, I am not sure that they will follow up. The “seller” of this item was removed from Amazon since my purchase, but the item itself continues to be sold by other sellers. URL listed below:

The product, in the report: Amazon power charger device

First, I would like to say that with each passing day both property and people are at risk charging their Amazon Kindle. I am very concerned and feel that there should be an immediate recall on the Kindle power cord (cable) manufactured for my device, the 2nd generation keyboard, at least this is what the Amazon customer rep called my device. I called Amazon to notify them of the scary incident we experiened, and they offerred to replace the power adapter/charger. I explained that this was not the true purpose of my call and continued to explain the following incident. I urged them to recall the cord immediately in order to prevent electrocution, shock, and fire that could cause loss of life and property as well. They told me that this is the first they had heard of this but would send my concerns to some team at Amazon.

I later went online and googled kindle power cord defective, or recall or somthing similar to these words. I was taken to Amazon where comments were posted and replacement cords were for sale. There were many comments stating similar experiences to ours concerning the cable. Amazon had to have known about this problem because others have alredy contacted them and posted comments. The reps I spoke with previously did not hesitate to offer to replace the cord but wanted to charge me for shipping. I now believe they were aware of the problem.

I then spent about 40 minutes composing a comment on the Amazon product review section concerning the power cord and urging anyone reading my post to file a report with you, and to call and urge Amazon to take the responsibility to issue a recall. I guess Amazon intercepted the message as I never saw my comment that I spent much time composing and felt such urgency to post. I was told by two seperate Amazon reps yesterday that someone from Amazon would contact me today by phone. I have not heard from Amazon. The incident is described and follows.

We were packing to leave on vacation last week. The Kindle had been plugged into a surge protected power strip where we charge telephones as well as the Kindle. [REDACTED] wanted to take the Kindle and charger with us, she reached to unplug it by pulling on the plug to release it from the outlet. As she did this she noticed that part of the wire was bare and small pieces of the cable’s insulation had fallen off and onto the top of the console where the power strip sits. As she held the cord to determine how bizarre this was, more of the cracked pieces fell away leaving large and small sections of bare wire! The insulation was cracked all along the cord and just a slight touch caused pieces to break away and fall off. The pieces of cable insulation material upon inspection appear to be brittle as well. If [REDACTED] had pulled the cord from the outlet by using any part of the cord to assist its release, like most children and teenagers often do, she would have been shocked or electrocuted completing this action. If papers had been laying near or in contact with the bare wire, we may have not made it to our vacation the night it was charging. I can assure you that this charger has never been used by children, been in extreme conditions, or exposed to extreme temperatures or harsh conditions of any kind. It has been in a climate controlled environment and only used by adults. The Kindle and charger will be 3 years old this Christmas.

I can honestly say that I have seen and used many appliance cables and cords over my lifetime but have never seen a power cable’s protective insulation on any appliance break down like this. There is no melting of the plastic. It just appears to be a substandard material not sufficient for this application used to manufacture the cable. I would be more than happy to send the power cable to you for inspection and testing but only if you agree to pursue this because I may need to send it to a future contact if you do not choose to act.

I have no idea how many Kindles are in American homes. I am guessing that millions have been sold. I am very concerned and feel that I have a personal responsibility to not only report this to you but to insure that Amazon proceeds with a recall. It is important that I hear from you concerning the actions that you are willing to take. I will excersise every resource available to prevent innocent people from being harmed or killed by electrical shock and from having a house fire possibly causing loss of life due to the use of this inferior and dangerous product. I informed the Amazon rep that they could send me a new cord but the Kindle will not be used unless I know for sure that this new cord is safe. I have no idea that the replacement cord will be safe, especially if they are still having this product made in China with inferior materials.

I am including information printed between the plug prongs of my power cord. I feel this may be beneficial to you to identify my power cord and others out there in American homes. I AM SURE THERE IS A POSSIBILITY THAT OTHER MODEL NUMBERS MIGHT BE INVOLVED AS WELL.! I bought this kindle as a Christmas gift for my roomate, [REDACTED] I consider both of us to be victims. The product, in the report: USB cable used to power and charge Kindle e-reader. Connects Kindle to wall outlet or computer.

My high school library has a set of 11 Amazon Kindle e-readers. The plastic-coated charging cables on all of them have begun to disintegrate, exposing wiring underneath. I believe the visible wiring is actually part of the cable’s reinforcement--and not the wiring that carries electricity--but it has a loose weave that could be parted, exposing the live wires. I will attach a photo.

The product, in the report: Amazon Kindle chager wire

I reported once and the computer froze up when I tried to upload photos. This is a report of a potential fire/shock hazard from an Amazon Kindle e-reader’s recharging wire whose plastic coating crumbled, exposing the bare electric wire.

This is about the 6th time I’ve tried to file this report--your system freezes my computer when I try to upload photos, then when you save, it bounces you back to the beginning to start over all again. Your system is very frustrating and probably loses many filings. If the federal government can’t do something as simple as this, how can you expect the government to take over our health care system???? After I file here I will contact UL, a private organization that will probably do a much better job. This will be a good test to see who responds first. This is taking up so much time.

The product, in the report: Amazon Kindle USB Cable, White, received Dec. 2009 for a 2nd Generation Amazon Kindle.

Product: Amazon Kindle Power Adapter Cable for a 2nd generation Amazon Kindle. Received new in Dec. 2009. This month (Dec. 2011) the plastic coating around the cable began to crack and fall apart, exposing the wire. This is occurring all up and down the cable. The cable has seen normal use -- it generally sits on my dresser in our heated / air conditioned home and has not been used for anything other than recharging the Kindle. From the reviews of this product on Amazon.com, this appears to be a common problem that has happened to many other customers. Amazon is replacing the product for me free of charge. However, if I had not noticed the cracking and crazing, I could have easily received a shock.

The product, in the report: SATA/PATA/IDE Drive to USB 2.0 Adapter Converter Cable for 2.5 / 3.5 Inch Hard Drive / Optical Drive with External AC Power Adapter

I bought a item from Amazon, through BlueMall, mfg by Generic Electronics

This item SATA/PATA/IDE Drive to USB 2.0 Adapter Converter Cable for 2.5 / 3.5 Inch Hard Drive / Optical Drive with External AC Power Adapter came with a defective power supply that destroyed a functional HD. The power supply is outputting (to the Molex) in excess of 24v AC.This caused immediate overheating of the HD with smoke coming from unit and burning smell.and rendered it non-operational. I was able to unplug the defective power supply in time to prevent a fire or worse.

I have complained to Amazon, and BlueMall about the danger involved by this product but they did not address the problem.

The product, in the report: The electrical cord to recharge the Kindle 2 battery and/or connect it to the computer CPU.

The power cord on my Kindle e-reader dis-integrated suddenly. It just flaked off over the entire length. Apparently this is a common problem. There is an online discussion group devoted to this at www.Amazon.com under Kindle support. It doesn’t seem to matter whether the cord was left plugged in or only plugged in when in use. Also according to the discussion, age of the cord is not relevant. My cord is 2 years old. Amazon is authorizing a credit for me to replace it.

It seems like a big safety problem. Also it appears if contacted, Amazon will replace the cord. However, they have not alerted owners to the potential problem or recalled the cords. Thank you

The product, in the report: Amazon Kindle- the recharging cord

Amazon Kindle- the power cord completely crumbles. The outer wire insulation disintegrates, leaving the wire completely exposed.

MANY people have this problem. Amazon quietly sends you a new cord, at no cost, but the problems is that it is a DANGEROUS defect.

See the Amazon Kindle discussion boards. (Go to Amazon.com - Kindle Store - Discussions (on top bar), or http://www.amazon.com/tag/kindle/forum/ref=sv_kinc_7 and search for “power cord” and you will see many people complaining of their power cord crumbling.

I didn’t notice it, and plugged my kindle in to charge overnight, and the next morning I saw that it was charging, but the wire was completely exposed. It could have started a fire.

The power cord needs to be recalled and Amazon forced to reformulate it.
