The reports, as CPSC published them

Reports people made to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. CPSC publishes each one after sending it to the company named, and doesn’t guarantee they’re accurate. A report isn’t a recall.

Each report is the words of the person who made it, as CPSC published them. The company’s comments, where CPSC published any, are set apart as the company’s own.

  1. No one hurt

Made Jul 18, 2021, sent to the company Jul 20, 2021, published by CPSC Aug 10, 2021

The product, in the report: Blue Tiki Brand “Set Sail” tabletop torch. Available here: https://stopandshop.com/groceries/home-office/outdoor/outdoor-lighting-decor/torches/tiki-set-sail-nautical-glass-table-top-votive-1-ea.html L4000207

A Tiki Brand tabletop torch, purchased from Stop & Shop, exploded while in use. It was sitting on a deck railing, untouched and unmoved, when it exploded about 5 minutes after being lit - about 4 feet from my 6 year old son sitting facing the other way.

  2. Hospital admission

Made Jan 7, 2015, sent to the company Jan 20, 2015, published by CPSC Feb 10, 2015

The product, in the report: Brand name: Tiki Tiki torch fuel canister Description: black can with white text Top and bottom of can have “CA19” and side label contains “P1112087” Contains petroleum hydrocarbons (does not specify exact chemical)

Ingestion date: 16/09/14 16 month old male, previously healthy, with witnessed ingestion of Tiki Torch (R) Fuel from canister, also some spilled on clothing. Within 1 hour he was lethargic and had difficulty breathing with continued coughing, with questionable apnea at home, treated by rescue breathing by mother. He was then transported to the local emergency department.

Initial emergency x-ray appeared normal; however, subsequent decompensation to complete white out occurred on the second image. He was then intubated and transferred to a tertiary care facility and admitted to a pediatric ICU with toxicology bedside consultation. Upon admission he was transitioned to an oscillator and developed bilateral pneumothoraces after 1 week with further progression which required placement of bilateral chest tubes. He continued to have ongoing issues with desaturation and 2 PRBC transfusions for oxygenation purposes were administered.

Broad spectrum antibiotics and antifungal therapy were provided over the course of admission for treatment of pneumonia. Additionally, the patient developed tolerance/dependence to opioids (fentanyl and morphine) and benzodiazepines (midazolam) during ventilation and required taper for withdrawal prevention with methadone, clonidine, and lorazepam.

Outcomes: Chronic lung disease secondary to prolonged respiratory failure/chemical pneumonitis with prescription for budesonide, continued aspiration risk with swallowing issues which required restriction to thickened fluid diet and famotidine.

    Discharge date from hospital: 24/12/2014

The product, in the report: Tiki brand Island King oil torch by Lamplight Farms Inc

Refilled all four of my “Tiki” brand Island King oil torches (manufactured by Lamplight Farms Inc) after a few months of inactivity due to winter. Before I lit them I noticed fuel pouring out of the bottom on all four of them. Took them apart and found that all 4 of them had disintegrated at the bottom of the canister that holds the flammable oil. These torches are for outdoor use, and they were less than ten months old. This product is defective when used as directed, and downright dangerous.

The product, in the report: Island King® Large Flame TIKI TORCH® - Gun Metal Finish SPECIFICATIONS : Product # 1110124

Lamplight TIKI 1108367 Island King Large Flame Torch Purchased these near the end of the summer 2011. Went to refill with oil this spring and the bottoms of the fuel container had rusted apart on every single one of the 10 torches we had purchased. This caused the fuel to run out all down the pole and over the deck. This is a major fire hazard, as if we had lit the torches before we realized what was happening, the entire deck would have caught on fire. As it was, my husband got fuel oil all over him and all over the deck. This is apparently a defective product - if you read the reviews on [REDACTED] this has been a frequent occurrence with this product.
