The product, in the report: The product is an Ashley Furniture Coylin Coffee Table, model T136-8. It is a modern square coffee table featuring a large clear tempered-glass tabletop supported by a brushed metal base and frame. The base incorporates a distinctive angular, diagonal metal frame that crosses beneath the glass tabletop, creating the geometric design of the table while supporting the glass surface. The table measures approximately 86.7 cm D 86.7 cm W 41.6 cm H (34.1 in D 34.1 in W 16.4 in H) and is intended for residential indoor use as a coffee table in a living room, family room, or den.
I purchased an Ashley Furniture Coylin Coffee Table, model T136-8, for use in my home. The table was located in our den when the glass tabletop suddenly and catastrophically shattered without warning.
At the time of the incident, no one was in the den and no one was using or touching the table. My family members were elsewhere in the house when we heard an extremely loud sound that resembled an explosion. When we went into the den to investigate, we discovered that the entire glass tabletop had shattered. Nothing had been dropped on the table, and no one had touched, moved, struck, or otherwise interacted with it immediately before the incident.
This is especially concerning because the den is a regularly occupied room in our home. My daughter has her office space in the den and routinely works there, so she could very easily have been sitting near the table when it failed. At the time it shattered, however, she was safely in her bedroom. Fortunately, no one was injured.
I have documented the condition of the table, the shattered glass, the surrounding area, and the identifying product information. I have also preserved the table and available evidence.
I am reporting this because I am extremely concerned that a glass tabletop could fail this violently while sitting completely undisturbed. Given how frequently this room is used, the potential for serious injury is concerning. I would like this incident documented and reviewed and would like to know whether similar incidents involving this model or related Ashley Furniture products have previously been reported.
