The reports, as CPSC published them

Reports people made to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. CPSC publishes each one after sending it to the company named, and doesn’t guarantee they’re accurate. A report isn’t a recall.

Each report is the words of the person who made it, as CPSC published them. The company’s comments, where CPSC published any, are set apart as the company’s own.

  1. Hurt, no treatment

Made Nov 10, 2015, sent to the company Nov 19, 2015, published by CPSC Dec 4, 2015

The product, in the report: This is a coffee/cocktail table purchased from LaZBoy furniture on 8/4/2013. The vendor stock number is 050-913 and it is described as a “Tbl, cocktail, round”. A LaZBoy representative indicated that the supplier is Hammery Furniture and the apparent style number is 00022633659.

A 29-5/8 in diameter, 3/16- 7/32 in thick, round glass coffee/cocktail table top shattered into thousands of angular pieces and shards on the order of 1/8- 1/2 in without being subjected to any impact and with no substantial load. The glass pieces fell onto the floor and onto the lower level of the coffee table and could have injured anyone who was within a few feet of the table at the time. A young child, not understanding the danger of the small glass pieces, could have walked or crawled into the glass on the floor and been severely cut.

I was the only occupant of the room at the time sitting about 3ft from the table. The glass had about 1 lb of newspaper on top at the time of incident. There were no other items on the top. There was no impact of any kind at the time and there was no shaking from earthquake (we live in Southern California). The room temperature was normal- about 70 deg F, and, to the best of our knowledge, the glass was properly supported around its circumference. I heard a loud noise and immediately noticed that the table top had shattered and was lying all over the nearby floor and bottom coffee table level. I took pictures of the shattered table top and have kept all of the remnants except those which had to be vacuumed. I received a few of tiny cuts from small, nearly invisible, pieces of glass. I then put on gloves in order to clean up the glass. No other glass in the house, windows, mirrors or either of two other glass table tops was affected in any way.
