The reports, as CPSC published them

Reports people made to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. CPSC publishes each one after sending it to the company named, and doesn’t guarantee they’re accurate. A report isn’t a recall.

Each report is the words of the person who made it, as CPSC published them. The company’s comments, where CPSC published any, are set apart as the company’s own.

The product, in the report: I purchased the wire rolling shelving units from Costco. Brand name Trinity, Model TBF-PS664, link to product: https://www.costco.com/TRINITY-5-Tier-Outdoor-Wire-Shelving-Rack-|-48%22-x-18%22-x-72%22-|-NSF-|-Includes-Wheels-|-Gray.product.488963.html

The manual says that, with the casters on, each of the five shelves can be loaded with 150 pounds if evenly distributed. I loaded one up with around 200 pounds and the first time I tried to move it, a wheel bumped into an extension cord on the floor. The caster assembly torqued out of the tubing. Fortunately I was standing at the corner that failed and I was able to keep the unit from falling over. I figured it was just a defective part. I ordered a replacement part from Trinity. I again loaded the shelving unit, this time with maybe 150 pounds? I moved it across the garage once and it was fine. When I went to roll it back a wheel bumped into a scrap of ½” plywood. The caster assembly immediately torqued out of the tubing and this time the unit fell over. I took a closer look at the point where the casters connect to the tubing. The casters attach to the tubes using circular donut shaped pieces pressed into the tube. The threads are in the hole of the donut. The donut is tiny, when fully pressed in, it only goes into the tube about 3/8”. To hold the donut in, the tubing is dimpled in the hopes that the donut will also dimple and the two will stick together – they don’t. The donut pieces the failed do not have significant dimples, I assume because of how thick the donut is. The tubing is 0.06” thick. The combination of the tubing thickness and short length the donut goes into the tube is not adequate for normal use of the unit with 200 pounds. I believe these shelves are an accident waiting to happen. If someone relies on the instructions and loads 1000 pounds onto the unit and then moves it, the unit will fail. If someone is standing in the wrong place, they will have 1000 pounds suddenly falling on them. The shelving unit has a high rating on Costco’s site. I can’t understand how more people haven’t had this problem and give it such a high rating. My only guess is that few people actually roll the shelving around, perhaps it just stays in one place. Thank you for accepting my report!
