As each report says it, in short words; CPSC’s own words are under each.

The reports, as CPSC published them

Reports people made to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. CPSC publishes each one after sending it to the company named, and doesn’t guarantee they’re accurate. A report isn’t a recall.

Each report is the words of the person who made it, as CPSC published them. The company’s comments, where CPSC published any, are set apart as the company’s own.

  1. No one hurt

Made Sep 26, 2017, sent to the company Oct 4, 2017, published by CPSC Oct 19, 2017

The product, in the report: This is tire rack’s own brand. URL is https://www.tirerack.com/accessories/detail.jsp?ID=164

I mounted a wall tire storage rack per the instructions in a garage. Rack was used to store 4 snow tires and well under the maximum weight allowance. After being mounted for approximately 5 months the wall mount fell off the wall after the mounting hardware failed in multiple spots.

  2. No one hurt

Made Dec 18, 2016, sent to the company Jan 10, 2017, published by CPSC Feb 2, 2017

The product, in the report: The Tire Storage Rack is a well-engineered solution to help organize the garage and keep extra tires or Tire & Wheel Packages out of the way. The flexible design allows room for today’s performance-oriented Tire & Wheel Packages or can be adjusted to accommodate less aggressive tire widths. The adjustable rack quickly attaches to wall studs providing a convenient and safe storage method and its heavy-duty construction has been load tested to a weight capacity of 400 lbs. Adjustable Tire Rack

    I purchased a TireRack-branded tire rack from TireRack.com: http://www.tirerack.com/accessories/detail.jsp?ID=164

Upon installing the rack, I noted that the installation instructions are incorrect with regard to the pilot hole that should be drilled for the supplied 1/4” lag screws: http://www.tirerack.com/images/accessories/search/tirestoragerack_instructions.pdf

The instructions indicate using a 3/16” drill bit for the pilot hole; however this will drill-out 1/3 of the good wood that the threads of the lag screws would bite in to and hold in to the wall. The American Wood Council draws standards for this sort of thing and they indicate a MUCH smaller pilot hole of 7/64” for a soft wood (as would commonly be found in home construction) wall. http://l-36.com/woodscrewpilot.php

I believe that the included instructions with this product create a critical hazard where this rack may pull out of the wall it’s installed to. This hazard is especially serious in that the rack is designed to store 400 lbs. overhead.
