I am greatly concerned about a product that I have purchased tonight at Target. The product is listed as “bookshelf” and sold in the Target Furniture department. https://www.target.com/p/9-cube-organizer-shelf-13-threshold-153/-/A-50253268?preselect=17424404#lnk=sametab

Weight capacity is 30lbs per cube shelf. Top shelf weight capacity is 80lbs “ END QUOTE

I bought this product today and followed instructions to assemble. The product is entirely unstable and unfit for sales in the United States. For one, the structural support elements are short 1” x 1/4” wooden dowels that are inserted into pre-drilled holes in six 13” x 13” x 1/2” particle board.

The troubling thing about this unit is that the instructions explicitly state that the unit must be secured to wall studs by two 1 1/2” wall brackets. However, the instructions also state that the provided metal bracket must be installed less than 1 1/2” from the edge of board “A”. Board “A” is 43” long. At best, if you install at exactly 1” from the end, you end up with 41” to 40” being the distance between the metal brackets. That distance does not concur with the spacing of a wall stud in residential construction.

In the US, most residential wall studs are 16” apart from center to center. This means that it is IMPOSSIBLE to install this “bookcase” correctly. It is not possible to install these brackets under the bookshelf’s shelf as instructed AND simultaneously install into a wall stud 39” to 41” apart.

Therefore, when installed correctly, one or both of the wall mounted brackets will not be installed into a wall stud. If you are putting this particular unit against a wall, the wall stud can not be located 1 “ from the corner of the dry wall. That’s not where a stud would be located.

Even more troubling is that the manufacturer may be overstating the mass capability of the unit. Upon lateral force (like a child pushing on the side of the product), the product will not withstand significant lateral motion. There are six 13” square pieces of wood vertically stacked using wooden dowels that are only 1 1/2” inches long. These dowels barely mate to the adjacent 13” square wooden piece through holes in the two shelves.

I am quite concerned that this particular unit will lead to infant or child death because the wall unit will fall on the child or toddler that is climbing on this unit. It should not be listed as a “bookcase” at all. It should be listed as a “wall unit” because the product REQUIRES brackets to securely hold the furnishing against a wall.

More to the point, if a child begins crawling on the side or front of the unit and if a consumer follows the manufacturer instructions, you could have literally 180 lbs of material falling on the toddler climbing on the unstable “bookcase”.

This product needs investigation and I suggest withdrawal from all Target stores nationally. More importantly, the product needs to be recalled such that no infants or toddlers are harmed by incorrect installation of this wall unit. It’s clear that if a small child (toddler) was to lean against the top of the unit’s side, the deflection could collapse the entire bookcase. If the manufacturer’s claim of 30lbs per shelf slot is filled by a consumer, the total mass in the product would be 30 x 9 = 270 lbs. Plus, the wall unit itself appears to be around 40-50 lbs at minimum and not including any objects on the top of the unit.

Though I practiced pediatrics for 19 years, I’ve never submitted a CPSC report until tonight. This product needs review by CPSC in order to evaluate if other infants and children have been harmed this product. Also, I’d like to suggest a voluntary recall of the existing sold products by Target because these “bookcases” are not “bookcases” at all. With the Target instructions clearly stating “must be” attached to wall before use, it’s not a bookcase but a WALL UNIT.

The product, in the report: Target- Classic Wall Shelf 36” in white

A floating shelf that I purchased at Target falls off the wall if it is bumped into in any way. It’s happened three times and I cannot stress how little you have to touch it for it to fall off. The shelf is installed correctly, but the shelf is not secured to the mounting bracket in any way. The shelf holds a decent amount of weight, but if it’s moved up at all, the entire thing falls down. It’s fallen on my foot without major injury, thankfully, but it has broken a few of my items.
