The reports, as CPSC published them

Reports people made to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. CPSC publishes each one after sending it to the company named, and doesn’t guarantee they’re accurate. A report isn’t a recall.

Each report is the words of the person who made it, as CPSC published them. The company’s comments, where CPSC published any, are set apart as the company’s own.

  1. No incident, no one hurt

Made Jul 22, 2026, sent to the company Jul 27, 2026, published by CPSC Aug 10, 2026

The product, in the report: RYOBI LINK Bike Hook, a wall mounted steel hook sold as part of the RYOBI LINK modular garage storage system. It is a J-shaped hook, black with a non-slip coating, welded to a flat steel mounting plate roughly 6 inches by 6 inches. The plate has a yellow-green plastic locking tab that clips the hook onto a RYOBI LINK wall rail, which is a black plastic and steel rail screwed to a garage wall. The product is sold to hang a bicycle by its wheel rim so it stores vertically against the wall, off the floor. RYOBI rates it at a 50 lb weight capacity and describes it as steel construction, ideal for bicycles. I bought it at Home Depot on 03/23/2024.

RYOBI LINK Bike Hook, model STM809, part of the RYOBI LINK modular wall storage system. The hook is a steel J-hook welded to a flat mounting plate that locks onto a RYOBI LINK wall rail mounted to my garage wall. A bicycle hangs by its wheel rim from the hook. This is the sole advertised use. RYOBI rates it at 50 lb capacity with steel construction.

It was installed per instructions and held one bicycle weighing well under 50 lb. It was never dropped, struck, modified, or overloaded. Used by an adult homeowner for ordinary residential bike storage.

The hook failed at the weld joining the hook to the mounting plate. The weld separated and released the load. This is a structural failure of the load-bearing joint, not wear of the coating or of the plastic locking tab. Photos of the separated weld are attached.

No injuries occurred. However, the failure presents a clear injury risk. The product suspends a heavy object overhead in a garage where children and adults walk. A bicycle released without warning from wall height onto a person below, especially a small child, could cause serious head or crush injury. Because the failure began at a weld rather than visible wear, a consumer has no warning sign before it lets go.

I am concerned this indicates a manufacturing or design weakness in the welded joint rather than an isolated defect, since the weld failed well under the rated capacity.
