How badly anyone was hurt

  • No one hurt 1 CPSC: Incident, No Injury

As each report says it, in short words; CPSC’s own words are under each.

The reports, as CPSC published them

Reports people made to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. CPSC publishes each one after sending it to the company named, and doesn’t guarantee they’re accurate. A report isn’t a recall.

Each report is the words of the person who made it, as CPSC published them. The company’s comments, where CPSC published any, are set apart as the company’s own.

The product, in the report: 5-shelf bookcase

Purchased a 5-shelf bookcase from Target. On the instruction sheet, item is listed as Room Essentials, style #411758, and dpci #249-05-0089. The cost was $32.99. The bookcase comes in 2 large sections that are assembled separately, then attached together. The height after assembly is approx 71 inches. The only hardware attaching the two pieces together are one single cam and two small metal 1-inch rods. Instructions caution not to move unit until cardboard backing is nailed on. All instructions were followed. When we tried to move the unit after assembly, the top section broke away and both pieces overturned onto the floor. No injuries, but sections are very heavy. Returned to store, and told them of the problem. Worry that item will simply be returned to sales floor.
