The reports, as CPSC published them

Reports people made to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. CPSC publishes each one after sending it to the company named, and doesn’t guarantee they’re accurate. A report isn’t a recall.

Each report is the words of the person who made it, as CPSC published them. The company’s comments, where CPSC published any, are set apart as the company’s own.

  1. No one hurt

Made May 25, 2022, sent to the company Jun 2, 2022, published by CPSC Jun 17, 2022

The product, in the report: Robern Uplift 30 Medicine cabinet, UC3027FPL, SN D2114 Unknown date of manufacture.

A Robern Medicine cabinet, Uplift 30, Model UC3027FPL, which is electrified (lights in the cabinet, nightlight, 120 V outlets, heated mirror to defog). Approximately two months ago it started to make a “scratching” sound. The cabinet opens by lifting the front straight up. I then noticed wires, bare, hanging down in one side of the cabinet. It appears a ribbon cable was rubbing the wires and they fractured. Currently the wires are falling out of the cabinet. Several of the features do not work at this time (they did previously) I am concerned that this has become a shock or fire hazard as it is still electrified. I contacted the company, Robern, and they said they do not currently manufacture this same cabinet but have others that are similar. They have no parts to repair the cable. They will sell me another. I feel due to the electrical issues, this should be replaced or repaired.

  2. Seen by a doctor or nurse

Made Jan 5, 2019, sent to the company Feb 12, 2019, published by CPSC Feb 28, 2019

The product, in the report: Robern, “Profile Cabinets” medicine cabinet; Model - MT24D4MDCR Purchased 5/2012

We purchased a Robern recessed medicine cabinet, Model-MT24D4MDCR, 05/2012, and had it installed by bathroom contractor 06/2012.

On Thursday, 01/03/2019, I opened the medicine cabinet door to get some medicine and the large outside/inside mirrored door came loose at the top hinge and feel onto my forehead causing a one inch cut. The cut required “glueing” and bandage at a local urgent care facility.

On inspection of the medicine cabinet after the incident, I found that the door of the cabinet is attached with a two part hinge; part 1, is a small bracket that is attached to the cabinet with a single small machine screw, part 2, is the pivoting portion of the hinge assembly that attaches to the door, part 2 is attached to part 1 with 2 screws and part 2 is attached to the door with 2 screws. The falling door was the result of the small screw holding part 1 of the hinge assembly to the cabinet coming loose, thus disconnecting the door from the cabinet. Once the hinge assembly is put together, there is no way to check the status of this small screw. Looking at the vendor installation instruction (which I still have on file) there is no mention of the small screw being a locking screw, or of the installer having to use “[REDACTED]” to secure the screw.

Without using “[REDACTED]” to secure screws in the hinge assemble, or having a safety cable/strap to secure the door to the cabinet, this unit presents a true danger to consumers, as I can attest to.

My recommendation to the manufacturer would be to include a safety cable/strap attaching the for to the cabinet, and to include “[REDACTED]” with installation parts kit./
