Hazard Description
I purchased this freestanding pantry cabinet from Bed Bath & Beyond for approximately $485. After assembly and normal household use, one of the cabinet doors detached when the hinge mounting points failed. The hinge screws pulled out of the cabinet side panel, causing the entire door to fall off unexpectedly.
The detached door is heavy enough that it could strike and seriously injure an adult or child standing nearby. The failure occurred during ordinary use and not as a result of misuse, overloading, or modification of the cabinet.
I believe this product presents a safety hazard because the hinge attachment relies on particleboard that failed to retain the hinge screws, allowing the door to separate from the cabinet without warning.
Bed Bath & Beyond offered to accept a return of the cabinet but did not offer reimbursement for the $75 I paid to have it professionally assembled. Because the cabinet was already assembled and the original packaging was discarded, returning it is impractical. I am submitting this report so the product can be evaluated for a potential safety defect and to help prevent similar incidents involving other consumers.
