The reports, as CPSC published them

Reports people made to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. CPSC publishes each one after sending it to the company named, and doesn’t guarantee they’re accurate. A report isn’t a recall.

  1. No one hurt

Made Sep 20, 2023, sent to the company Jan 9, 2024, published by CPSC Jan 25, 2024

The product, in the report: 5 tier garage shelving, red in color. 48” wide, 24” deep and 75” tall.

From Home Depot I bought a Husky brand 5 tier H.D. steel garage shelving unit. Didn’t assemble for approximately one year so there is no return. Assembled correctly per instructions and when I placed approximately 70 lbs on a shelf the rails spread pulling retaining hooks out and items dropped pulling the 3 shelves below out and dropped 4 feet to the ground. Luckily my hands and feet were clear and no injuries occurred. I’m experienced in constructing/assembling and believe this is a poor design that should be investigated before someone get seriously hurt as it’s advertised as holding 1000 lbs per shelf and has 5 shelves. Home Depot customer care line offered me a $20 gift card towards a replacement unit, I not so politely declined.

The product, in the report: Husky Red 5-Tier Heavy Duty Steel Garage Storage Shelving (48 in. W x 78 in. H x 24 in. D), Home Depot Internet #308458506 Model #MR482478W5-R, Store SKU #1004171297

1000 pound rated shelving unit failed due to the side rails bowing outwards and allowing the shelf to fall through the side rails. There are metal S hooks that attach the shelf to the side rails and keep the side rails from bowing under load. The included S hooks are too long to keep the side rails attached and if a load is shifted on the shelf it’s enough to cause the side rails to bow and the shelf falls.

The product, in the report: HUSKY #H52CH6TR9HD

husky tool chest combination model #H52CH6TR9HD Top widest drawer of lower cabinet is attached with flimsy slides that will not support weight when loaded with tools. After loading the drawer fell off when opened and the tools fell out. I was not injured, but I could see where this could be very hazardous depending on the situation. I believe the drawer slides and the design are flawed.

  4. No one hurt

Made Sep 2, 2012, sent to the company Sep 11, 2012, published by CPSC Sep 25, 2012

The product, in the report: Garage wall organizer/storage unit

Home Depot brand, Husky Secure Lock Track Wall, model THD101, Husky 35 lb Vertical Bike Hooks, model THD208, and Husky Track Wall Fastener Kit, model THD 150. Advertised max capacity is 75 lbs per linear ft, which would be 300 lbs for the 4ft section I purchased. I installed the track wall according to package directions, using 6 of the fastener kit screws each into studs. It was appx 7 ft off the floor in my garage, and according to package directions, I counter-sunk the screws “... to be flush with the surface...” of the track wall. I then attached 4 bike hooks, and hung 4 adult size bicycles from the unit. Each bike weighs about 30-35 lbs, according to my bathroom scale. After approximately 10-15 minutes, the entire unit broke free from the mounting screws, and everything came crashing to the floor. Thankfully, we had just stepped out from under the unit, so no one was hurt. However, one bike wheel was damaged beyond repair, and several bike components were bent and scratched. My conclusions are that when this product is installed using the appropriate materials, and following the manufacturer’s instructions, and using appropriate accessories, it is unsafe. In my opinion, the screws do not provide enough distribution of force along the composite material to prevent the material from failing. The instruction to counter-sink the screws is also problematic, because although this seems necessary to allow adjustment of mounting/hanging accessories along the track, doing so apparently significantly reduces the strength of the composite material, such that catastrophic failure has occurred. I returned the track wall unit and the 4 bike hooks to the store (in rehoboth beach, del) today, and received a full refund, but I now have a bike with a ruined wheel that I must now replace.
