  1. Hurt, no treatment

Made May 27, 2014, sent to the company Jun 4, 2014, published by CPSC Jun 18, 2014

The product, in the report: shelves

On February 16, 2014, I purchased on the internet, shelves from [REDACTED], Sehorsch Architecture and Design, LLC - 6615 Franklin Avenue Suite 217 - Hollywood, CA 90028. (The item, called Hollywood Franklin Tower, can be viewed at: www.sehorsch.com - then click on link labeled FRANKLIN CAT FURNITURE). Upon receiving the shelves on February 28, 2014, and opening the box, I was hit with a very strong chemical smell, and immediately began to sneeze, eyes watering, and sinuses became closed. I waited several days and these symptoms did not stop.

I contacted the business owner via email telling him about my symptom reactions to the chemical fumes and asked how to this issue could be fixed. He responded that the product might have been packaged before they were fully dry. He told me to put the shelves in a warm room and that the odor would disappear in a day or two. And he concluded with his words - “TRUST ME ON THAT”.

I tried what he told me to do and after ONE week (not the one/two days as he said) the shelves were still affecting me, so I wrote back to the business owner. His response was to write that he uses low vac (sic) stain that is not harmful to the human body.

I wrote back to him with information regarding low VOC stains and that they can cause reactions for people, I asked him how to fix. His response was to tell me that the product was safe and the there is really nothing he can do.

It has now been three months and this product is still giving off smells and fumes, I have put them in my shed outside while waiting for resolution to complaints I have submitted to Government agencies. I have an auto-immune disease, and having these shelves in my home have definitely caused a reaction for me. I would like to know exactly what type of chemical stain this business owner used, or what is in the particle board, or perhaps it is the carpet he put on each shelf. I want to know what chemical are now in my body so that I can work to remove the toxins.

The business owner told me via email to not contact him anymore or that he would call the police so I don’t know where to turn.

I have also submitted a complaint against [REDACTED], Architect, to the California Architects Board, as he has neglected to secure an Architects license and has been running his business and selling products without one.
