The product, in the report: Ferron Lighted Curio Cabinet, sold by Wayfair under the Darby Home Co. brand. Actual manufacturer is unknown.. It is a glass-front display cabinet with five removable tempered-glass shelves and interior lighting. The cabinet was used only for displaying collectibles.
A tempered-glass shelf in a Darby Home Co. curio cabinet purchased from Wayfair unexpectedly shattered while we were away from home. No one was using or handling the cabinet at the time. The cabinet was standing in its normal location and had not been moved, struck, or otherwise disturbed. The shelf was being used normally to display collectibles and was not overloaded.
When we returned home, we discovered that the shelf had completely shattered, sending tempered-glass pieces throughout the interior of the cabinet and onto items displayed below it. Pieces of glass remained on and around the shelf supports. Several collectible and heirloom items inside the cabinet were chipped or broken.
No one was injured because no one was home when the shelf failed. However, the amount of shattered glass and the manner in which it fell could have caused cuts or other injury if someone had been standing near the cabinet.
The cabinet contains four other apparently identical tempered-glass shelves. Because the shelf failed without any known impact or other external cause, I am concerned that the remaining shelves could present a similar safety risk.
