How badly anyone was hurt

  • No one hurt 2 CPSC: Incident, No Injury

As each report says it, in short words; CPSC’s own words are under each.

The reports, as CPSC published them

Reports people made to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. CPSC publishes each one after sending it to the company named, and doesn’t guarantee they’re accurate. A report isn’t a recall.

Each report is the words of the person who made it, as CPSC published them. The company’s comments, where CPSC published any, are set apart as the company’s own.

The product, in the report: Danish White and Natural Tall Bookcase from Crate and Barrel.

A bookshelf (Crate and Barrel Danish White and Natural Tall Bookcase) was being used to hold children’s books and a few small children’s china pieces weighing less than 20lbs total. It has been standing for six months with about four month’s light use. We left the house and when we returned an hour later, one of the legs of the bookshelf had snapped off and the bookshelf has fallen and slammed into the ground.

The legs are secured to the main body of the bookshelf by a single soft-wood peg and glue. There is no way that this piece was actually designed to hold any real weight.

The product, in the report: Crate and Barrel 87 inch Sterling Glass Cabinet

Crate and Barrel 87 inch Sterling Glass Cabinet. Last night the top glass shelf exploded when no one was around and without any reason. The glass shattered breaking items in the cabinet and damaging other glass in the cabinet. The unit was purchased in May 2014.

I would like to update my report. Below it states it will not be posted because the “risk of harm” was not described. Please add the following:

There was significant possible risk of harm due to the shattering of this glass- when the glass exploded it went all over and chipped the solid glass shelf below it. While cleaning up the shards of glass (even though it was tempered glass) I did have glass cut my fingers. It was not severe enough to need any medical attention and I was able to remove it with tweezers. If I, or my three small dogs, had been in the room or had the door to the unit been open at the time there could have been personal harm done.

There is also a complaint (with pictures) of this same unit having glass spontaneously shatter on a Crate and Barrel customer on December 30, 2015. The complaint is logged with pictures on ConsumerAffairs.com [REDACTED]
